Students living on the Swansea University Bay Campus have become increasingly concerned over proposed construction work to take place throughout May and June. The work carried out by VINCI construction on behalf of St Modwen will lead to students having to cope with construction noise while revising and taking exams on the campus.
Construction has not been a rare site at the bay campus site with students regularly having to cope with heavy construction noise throughout the year in the normal working hours of 7am-6pm, though concerns have reached a peak considering the timing of this construction. VINCI construction in a newsletter released to residents in the general area have stated that they will likely have to increase work beyond the normal working hours end time of 6pm, which could lead to students having to deal with noise until later in the evening. One student who did not wish to be named had this to say “I’m very concerned about revising at the campus, I will probably have to use the singleton library if the noise gets too much”.
Robiu Salisu the union Education Officer had this to say “This issue was raised to me by a student at the campus and has been passed on to the Bay Campus Implementation Group (BCIG) meeting last week. The representative from the Construction Company has taken this back and will provide an update in the next meeting. I will however stay in touch with Lewys, current President who sits on this committee and who facilitated the meeting to see if there has been update from them before that. But if either this isn’t actioned or the problem persists, then I will have to raise it much more strongly”
If any student wishes to raise concerns or give their opinion on the issues please either email us here at Waterfrontnews@swansea-union.co.uk or give feedback to Robiu Salisu the Swansea Student’s Union Education Officer at Educationofficer@swansea-union.co.uk.
