Annamaria Nichols writes about the latest developments in Swansea Sailing…
The weekend of the 30th/31st of January saw three Swansea University Sailing Club teams reunited with the Swansea Old Boys sailing team in Warwick. All four teams had arrived for the Warwick Turtle, a team racing event hosted by the University of Warwick Sailing Club with 19 teams entered.
Saturday morning was an early and breezy start! The windy conditions seemed to suit Swansea Green, winning 3 out of 3 races. Swansea White got off to a slow start winning 1 out of 3, while Swansea Black had a hard time winning none of their races. Unfortunately, the wind built steadily throughout the day and racing had to be called off early.
After a few more races on Sunday morning, the teams were split into flights. Swansea Green was placed in gold, Swansea White in silver and Swansea Black in bronze. Swansea Green won most of their races in gold fleet, earning themselves a place in the semi-finals. Swansea White had a great day winning all their races in silver fleet, also putting them through to the semi-finals. Swansea Black won most of their races in bronze fleet.
Unfortunately both Swansea Green and Swansea White lost their semi-final races, meaning they were now battling it out 3rd and 4th position. Despite the wind slowly dying, the race was completed and saw Swansea Green come out victorious and take 3rd place.
We would like to thank the University of Warwick Sailing Club for such a well-run event.
Swansea University Sailing Club are also pleased to announce that they have won the bid to host the BUCS Sailing Play-Offs. This event is the second stage of qualification to the BUCS Sailing finals for those teams who came 5th, 6th or 7th in their regional qualifiers. This is a prestigious event that the Sailing club are looking forward to hosting. The event will take place on the 5th and 6th of March.
