The event, which took place from November 25th to November 29th, was organised by part-time disability officer, Tori Evans.

She said: “Invisible illness Week is important to me because so many people suffer in silence. A lot of people don’t look for help because they are embarrassed or don’t think they deserve it.

“The whole point of the week is to get people talking about invisible illnesses and to remember and acknowledge what we so often ignore.

“Not only will it help people share their stories and end stigma but will also encourage those who need to look for help and to know that they deserve it just as much as anyone else does.

“I’ve already had an overwhelming response from students and feel like the week has achieved loads of things that I wanted to, which is amazing.”

The parody videos, uploaded onto YouTube, have received thousands of views and have even been praised by the show’s own, Binky Felstead.

Using the hashtag #MIScene, the lads plan to make the series go viral. Gemma Parry spoke to Tom Cullimore, Alex Lee Josh Allard and John Roberts (pictured below) about their inspiration behind the series, their favourite character roles and on-set chemistry.

So far four videos have featured on YouTube and have had around 2,000 views overall.

GEMMA: Why did you decide to do it?
TOM: We love the show. We all watch it together every week. It was just a bit of an impulse thing.
ALEX: There was an episode with a big scene at the end which we all reacted to in fits. We couldn’t believe what had happened.
TOM: Yeah, we were all screaming at the TV and shaking our fists. And it was in that moment that we all turned and looked at each other and thought, “Why not recreate it?”
ALEX: It was John’s idea. He came up with is and he created it and we’ve never looked back. He’s not just a pretty face.

GEMMA: Who is your favourite character in the show?
ALEX: I think the character we can get the most material from is Spencer.
TOM: He’s just always causing havoc – he’s the wrecking ball of Chelsea. We get a lot of our material from Spence just being an idiot really. His lack of human empathy is something we can really draw on.
ALEX: The most controversial character is definitely Spencer but my favourite character has to be Jamie.
JOSH: To be honest, I’ve ever performed as Andy, but my favourite character has to be Proudlock. He’s just too cool.
JOHN: For me, it’s got to be Mark Francis. He’s incredibly entertaining.
TOM: Francis Boulle. He’s just something else in the whole series. He doesn’t take it all too seriously – it just goes over his head and he takes it all in his stride.

GEMMA: How is seeking international fame going?
TOM: We’ve had a tweet from Alexandra Felstead who plays Binky in Made in Chelsea and she said that she loves our
parody. So it’s going pretty well.
JOHN: When we first started posting the videos on Facebook, the reaction was great. The feedback we get every week while the show is going on is fantastic. We get tweets saying: “We can’t really watch the show without thinking about what scene you’re going to be performing.” So, we’ve decided to make the transition to YouTube, using Facebook and Twitter to promote them, and it’s gone brilliantly. We’ve got over one thousand views for our series so far.
JOSH: In terms of filming, we have our own cameraman, Akash Chibber. It’s really the team behind us and the chemistry we share that makes it work so well. I don’t think that we realised what it would become when we started. But I’ve always said, a good idea is a good idea forever.

During the raid, 40 vehicles were stopped, with 18 being found to have problems – a dozen of these so dangerous that they were immediately taken off the road.

The stop and search, carried out by South Wales Police’s commercial vehicle unit on November 2, was the latest in a series of unannounced checks on commercial vehicles bringing people into Swansea for a night out.

Among the defects found were problems with brakes, tyres and lighting , a fuel leak, an oil leak and one vehicle was immediately clamped due to a rusted suspension.

Other problems included breaches of laws regarding drivers’ hours and MoT class.

PC Phil David said: “While we have seen a slight improvement in the condition of the vehicles checked, it is still alarming that a number of vehicles transporting passengers around the city are defective.

“We will continue to work with the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency and the local authority to address this problem and will strive to ensure that all transportation to and from the city will be safe and legitimate.”

The resignation follows a disciplinary hearing involving Mr Singh in which it was claimed that he made inappropriate and unprofessional remarks to a female student member of staff at an event in June.

The union released a statement saying: “The students’ union received a complaint against the education officer that was investigated and referred to a disciplinary committee for their consideration. The committee upheld the complaint.

“The education officer then took the decision to resign and this was accepted with immediate effect.

“The union is committed to its Zero Tolerance Policy and the welfare of students.”

In his letter of resignation, Mr Singh said: “Please accept this letter as notice of my immediate resignation from the post of Education Officer at Swansea University Students’ Union and Trustee of Swansea University Students’ Union.

“I have enjoyed being a part of the team and am thankful for the opportunities you have given me during my time here. I owe a great deal to the students’ union and wish you all the best in future endeavours.”

Students’ Union president Zahid Raja said: “As the students’ union constitution does not allow for a by-election for any full-time officer post, the responsibilities within the role of education officer will be undertaken by the president, who will delegate responsibilities to other members of the full-time officer team.

He added: “The full-time officer team have made a commitment to work on the ideas contained with[in] Swaran’s manifesto.

“I want to make it absolutely clear that this resignation will not compromise the students’ union work on academic representation and campaigns.”

The service was down for almost a day in each case.

The university said the first outage was due to a malfunction in the SQL database service and said the second was caused by a Microsoft Windows Update that caused the server to crash.

Swansea University Students’ Union Education Officer, Zahid Raja, said, “Students anywhere in the UK expect their university to provide a reliable service through which students can access their lecture notes to revise. We are no different in Swansea.

“The university Blackboard team works hard to keep things running, however, outages regarding learning resources are unacceptable during assessment periods.

“I will be meeting with the university to discuss how we can work together to set up a 24 hour contact point that students can use to report disruptions.”

The university issued an assurance that the two events were not linked, and that they took the reliability of this and other core services very seriously.

Other universities have reported increases of up to 25%.

The increases at Swansea University include 13 out of 15 subject groups, including a 15% rise in Languages, a 20% increase in History and a 64% rise in Maths, Computer Science and Engineering.

The trebling of tuition fees to £9,000 for many courses saw a fall in admissions last September when applications dropped by an overall 8%, with a 25 per cent drop in the college of arts and humanities.

Universities have since been attempting to buck the trend both by lowering the tariff for A level grades and offering courses that will lead to a higher chance of employment.

Swansea University has already reduced A-level grades for 2013 offers after a review of subject curriculum in September.

Additionally, changes have been made to the way in which interviews, open days and school visits are being run in this academic year.

Swansea University Students’ Union Education Officer, Zahid Raja, said: “Whilst this is fantastic news, the hard work is yet to come as we try and convert offers that we send out into conditional first choices.

“The union will be working alongside the university to get students committed to the Swansea experience as soon as they decide that they’re coming here.”

Professor Alan Speight, Pro Vice Chancellor for the Student Experience said: “These figures are excellent news, as it shows that students are recognising a university that is on the way up.

“Overall, student satisfaction has been steadily increasing, and last year we achieved a score of 87%, which is higher than the Wales and UK average.

“The increase in applications is a vindication of the massive investment which is being put into the campus expansion, alongside the recognition of the support we have from the Welsh government.”

A recent survey of UK human resources professionals found that 90% of employers search for unprotected social media profiles in order to assess a candidate’s suitability for a position.

Around 70% said they would turn down an applicant who had drunken or nude photos online.

The research suggested that the majority of 18-25 year olds had never reviewed their online profile, even though it could potentially have a great impact on their career prospects.

According to the study, recruiters were checking Facebook (85 per cent); Twitter (47 per cent); YouTube (23 per cent); Instagram (16 per cent); Flickr (15 per cent).

Recruiters say that young adults are not managing their profiles effectively, with nearly half concluding that this age group are unaware of the need to act responsibly online.

72% of recruiters rely on LinkedIn to conduct their searches, although only one in three employers fully trust the information that candidates post about themselves on the site.

65 per cent also view the content they find online about a candidate as very important.

Over half of the employers who partook in the survey say that they had turned down a job applicant based on their online profile.

Within a competitive job market, there are major advantages for savvy-candidates to differentiate themselves by proactively managing, and contributing to their online profile.

In contrast, over two thirds of HR professionals had been positively influenced by the online presence of a job applicant.

Tony Anscombe, Senior Security Evangelist for AVG Technologies which carried out the research said: “AVG’s latest research shows that the Internet and social networks in particular, has changed the way that HR professionals approach the recruitment process.

“Nowadays, online content posted about, or by a candidate, has become the modern-day equivalent of a first interview. Our research emphasises that our digital brand is potentially just as important as our CV.

“AVG encourages consumers to take control of their online privacy and more than ever, young adults need to proactively manage their online brand to avoid missing out on career opportunities.”

The Port Talbot-born actor received the award whilst attending the US launch of the Richard Burton Diaries in New York on Tuesday, October 16.

Swansea University’s Vice Chancellor Professor Richard B Davies presented the award to the actor who has starred in such acclaimed films as Frost Nixon, Damned United, The Queen and Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.

Prof Davies said: “These awards are conferred on individuals in recognition of outstanding achievement and contribution to the university or region. Michael Sheen has achieved extraordinary success internationally. But he has never forgotten his roots and has found many ways to give something back to our part of the world.”
Passion

Over Easter 2011, Sheen provided a huge boost to his home town by acting out the part of Jesus in The Passion; a theatrical project that took place in Port Talbot over three days and with the help of 1,000 local people.

On receiving the award, Sheen said: “I’m thrilled to receive this honorary degree, particularly as it comes from Swansea, the city that I grew up closest to. I am proud to be still involved with so many groups and organisations in the West Glamorgan area and so to be honoured by Swansea University in this way is especially meaningful to me.”

Just across the bay from Swansea University, Port Talbot is renowned for producing celebrated actors, including Sir Anthony Hopkins and Richard Burton.

The Richard Burton Diaries were donated to Swansea University by his wife Sally. They form part of the Richard Burton Collection in the Richard Burton Archives in the University’s Library.

These figures contrast drastically with the 13% of students from homes with two parents who say that they are also unlikely to go to university.

The National Union of Students (NUS) said the study supported concerns that the government’s decision to increase the cap on undergraduate tuition fees in England to £9,000 is deterring potential students.

Liam Burns, NUS president said: “The student funding arrangements are hideously complicated, so I am hardly surprised that those from less affluent backgrounds are concerned.
“Hanging a price tag of tens of thousands of pounds around a student’s neck before they even open a prospectus is going to be far from helpful in making sure the poorest students pick the right university.”

Zahid Raja, Swansea University students’ union education officer said, “It’s an absolute no brainer that as fees have risen, so have the numbers of people that put a price on their education.
“On our door step are communities whose children live below the bread line. Universities, including ours, must now look beyond league tables and focus on the work they do locally in order to create opportunities.”

Universities like Oxford, Cambridge, Durham or Bristol are seen as more expensive by 63% of students. More than half of the student population believes that these universities are attended by those from wealthy backgrounds.
