The volunteers, who are known as ‘Nubies’, were nominated for their work as gallery assistants.

The Nubies run the museum on a Saturday and help the public to experience ancient Egypt in a new and exciting way.

The Diana Award congratulatory letter said that the nominees were excellent role models and had that “Wow” factor that they were looking for.

The Nubie programme has been running for over 13 years and in that time over 200 children have become child volunteers.

Young people come from all over South and West Wales and the programme is so popular there is a waiting list for places.

Tom Clarke, aged 11 from Llanelli, joined the Egypt Centre when he was 10 years old. He said: “Volunteering has made me more confident around other people. I love working with the public and telling them about Egypt.”

This year, they are determined to continue with their accomplishments and expand further.

Due to large amounts of interest received from both new and previous members, they have created three strong and dedicated teams.

The first team were victorious in the final of the Bucs cup against Bath and also came top of their league, resulting in them being promoted to a more competitive and challenging league.

First team captain Brooke Collett is confident that her team can perform well.

She said: “It’s going to be a rough, gruelling year but we have such determined and talented players that we are positive that we can come away with a good few wins.”

The second team, captained by Lauren Smith, had a rocky start to to last season but managed to turn it around and remained  solid competitors in the league.

Captained by Megan Dacey, the third team were consistent and finished the season in second place after what was described as a phenomenal season.

In the coming year the club aims to maintain a strong standing in the Bucs league across all three teams.

Due to their success the netball players are even considering introducing a fourth team.

As of June 2012, Swansea’s AU will be coming to an end and divided into two halves – one half will be controlled by the students’ union and the other half by the sports department.

Ryan-Lowes feels the plans put together to maintain sport at the university is exciting.

He said: “I am not the captain of a sinking ship but the head of what I believe  is the greatest union in Swansea.”

Ryan-Lowes is confident student sport in Swansea will continue to grow after him – and despite the pressure, the president is eager to carry on with the year ahead.

And he is positive that his goals for the year are in reach and he has a lot to keep him busy.

He said: “I do believe that my policies are very achievable, yet at the same time, more and more things that I want to do seem to crop up.”

Ryan-Lowes plans to promote women’s sport, fight to put an end to Wednesday lectures, create better links with the students’ union and more.

Over the next few months he is keen to see a lot of smiles and take a hands-on approach.

“There is an awful lot that I don’t know about and I hope that my members can fill those gaps in my knowledge,” Ryan-Lowes said.

The new president has already had a very productive summer and is now ready for the return of students ahead of the new season.

“I have some extremely big shoes to fill and I cannot wait for the students to come back and to make sure that I am doing justice to their faith in me,” he added.

“These are important times for the AU and I am determined to go out with a bang”.
