The team produced an accomplished display as they beat Cardiff by 128 points to 111.

And Club President Madelaine Swift was delighted with their performance.

“The Men’s team competed superbly for their win. As we fence three weapons (foil, epee and sabre) they needed a great amount of versatility for the different skills needed in each weapon.

“In foil the men bagged a 14-point lead, in sabre a 15-point lead and that just left epee to get over 20 points, which was achieved in fantastic style.”

It was a less successful day for Swansea’s women fencers, but their captain Ruth Bowley was pleased with the side’s efforts.

“The women’s team did really well considering the Cardiff women are in the league above us.

“The final score was 135:65 to Cardiff but we fenced out of our skins to get the points we did. We’re really pleased with the results.

“I’d like to thank the crowd who came to watch us, it was much bigger than last year and really helped to push on our performance.”

Both Swift and Bowley are now looking forward to what next year has to offer for the club.

“Unfortunately a lot of the fencers in varsity were in their last year,” Swift explained. “So we really need those supporters to come and actually have a go.

“Their first session is free so they have no excuse not to.”

“We’re also looking forward to building stronger links with the Cardiff team,” said Bowley. “We’re planning some events with them so there’s lots to look forward to in the future.”

The boxing club are aiming to hold the event during the first weekend of December.

The club will have buckets at the event to collect donations.

“The box-a-thon will involve seven members of the club punching a bag for 24 hours nonstop,” said club president William Yard.

“We are hoping to help raise money for the club as well as for the Macmillan Cancer Research charity.”

The Club currently holds four weekly training sessions which are designed to accommodate all levels of experience.

All students are welcome to come join and “get or keep fit” in a sport that is growing in popularity among both genders.

Swansea achieved victories in the sabre and the foil, with team captain Richard Rapier calling it “a strong start to the season.”

Despite their unhappiness with the refereeing, Swansea dominated the sabre, and new addition to the squad Joe Brightman finished off Southampton in explosive fashion to record a score of 45-36.

The Epee event, Southampton’s  strongest category, saw them come into their own and take a quick lead.

George Orchant closed the gap and took both teams into the final round with equal scores, but Southampton were able to secure their own 45-36 victory.

In the foil, Swansea dominated throughout and pulled off an outstanding victory of 45-16, to give Swansea a comfortable overall win.

After the game, Rapier signalled his intent to build upon the win.

“This is a strong start to the season,” he said.

“We were set back by some bad calls in the sabre, but we didn’t let it get to us.

“This is how I intend the season to continue for us.”

Swansea won the three disciplines of foil, sabre and epee with ease.

Richard Rapier, coach of the men’s fencing team was delighted with his side’s performance.

“Our hard work has really paid off.

“Having a huge crowd to watch us cap off a great year was amazing.”

The foil discipline saw Swansea win 45-38 against a doggedCardiff side.

George Orchant claimed several impressive victories, winning 10-2, 13-0 and 5-4 to help claim victory for Swansea.

Swansea claimed victory in the sabre discipline 45-33.

Rapier’s performance provided a highlight for the crowd, verbally contesting the decisions made by the umpire.

Swansea’s epeeists capped off a brilliant performance by winning 45-29, totalling the scores to 135-100 to Swansea.

Woodward was impressed with the way Dan Ridsdale’s performance.

“Dan cemented an excellent start with a controlled finish.”

Due to their success, the club’s sessions are free for all to try till the end of term.

Swansea finished the season at the foot of the table without any points whilst Cardiff finished top, also securing the Bucs Fencing Trophy.

“I’m looking forward to Varsity, despite the challenge this season,” said Kinsella.

“With each member being assessed of their skills, this should rekindle our team’s competitive streak which we’ll definitely need for Varsity.”

Kinsella is anticipating the most experienced member of the team Ruth Bowley to perform “out of her skin.”

“I’m also looking forward to seeing Anna Lawrence, Zoe Beynon and Madeline Swift perform, all new to the sport at the start of the year.”

Kinsella is also aware that her side will have to train hard to beat a successful Cardiff side at Varsity.

“We all have our strengths and weaknesses within our team,” she said Kinsella added that fan support would be a huge boost for the team.

Last year, Swansea failed to capitalise on their 122-118 victory in 2010 when they were defeated 134-110 in Cardiff.

Swansea’s performances have been average and inconsistent this season, winning and losing four games apiece and finishing the season in fifth  position on 12 points.

In contrast, Cardiff have had a successful season in the Western 1A league, finishing in third position having claimed 18 points from their eight games.

The game between the two sides earlier in the season had seen Swansea falter with the final score being 127-112.

Swansea’s last victory was in February against University of Bath 2nds winning 135-70, whereas Cardiff won their two final games of the season.

The match takes place at the WIS.

Swansea were on the end of a defeat last year and are looking to bounce back with a win this time around.

“The squad and myself are quite confident this year, especially after the student ITF championships in Leeds,” said Batson.

“Some of our fighters beat theirs [Cardiff’s] at the tournament.

“It will make for an interesting showdown definitely!”

The Varsity taekwondo match consists of two main disciplines, sparring and patterns.

Batson added: “Cardiff and myself will be matching up our fighters for the match soon and will also discuss how the whole tournament will be judged.”

She believes their patterns were Swansea’s “weakest element” last year and needs the most work before the big day arrives.

The discipline of patterns consists of the performance of a sequence of set movements.

They are then marked based on technique, timing and breathing.

Batson and the squad are taking inspiration from the New Zealand rugby team and have created their own haka.

She added: “We will try and scare Cardiff, it should be good fun.”

Braddock won his medals in patterns and point-stop sparring and captain Emily Batson said the team is eager for more tournaments.

“Our performance in Leeds has boosted the club’s morale 100 per cent because of the success we had,” she said.

“Everyone is desperate to compete in another tournament.

“I couldn’t be more proud as a captain for all the hard work they’ve done which has evidently paid off.

“This puts us in high spirits for Varsity.”

The tournament consisted of four disciplines: patterns, point-stop sparring, continuous sparring and destruction.

A pattern is the performance of a sequence of set movements, and they get marked based on technique timing and their breathing.

Point-stop sparring is a timed contest between two fighters, a punch to body is one point, a kick to body is two points and a kick to head is three points.

The referee stops the fight each time a hit is noted. The winner has the most points at the end of the fight.

Continuous sparring is similar to point-stop but the scoring system differs.

The scores are marked by clickers in each of the corners with the referee only interfering if it gets too scrappy.

Destruction is the breaking of boards by the competitors.

Matthew Hakim, Laura Hunt, and Sam Mason all won silver for Swansea in sparring.

Lewis Bray, Batson, Mason and the jitsu captain, David Townsend, picked up bronze medals.

Batson said she is impressed by recruits who joined the club in September.

“Townsend also recently won gold for groundwork in jitsu,” she added.

Carey’s latest medal haul adds to a Welsh championship, Welsh team championship, and a silver medal in the prestigious Scottish Internationals she has already won during her time at Swansea University.

In the UK Open, she weighed in at 68kg exactly which allowed her to compete in both the -68 and +68 event.

“This is probably my most successful year to date, mainly because of the standard of competition now; you can get mostly national champions competing against you,” she said.

Carey is now hoping for more success in the final competitions of the academic year.

“I’m really hoping to be in the final of the Bucs championship as this is the one I really want to do well in,” she added.

“I also want the team to go for the overall Bucs shield as well.”

Carey hinted that this could be her final year as captain and appears to have chosen her likely successor.

“I might be leaving next year, so I’m hoping we will still have some high flyers at the club when I finally do leave,” she admitted.

“I know Sean Rees will still be doing well and I will likely recommend him for the role of captain if I do go.”

Rees won bronze at the UK Open while the men’s team also picked up silver, narrowly losing in the final of the competition.

The event, held at Walsall Judo Centre, saw Swansea win the medals over two gruelling days.

Gold medallist, Konstantins Lazars enjoyed his performance at the event.

“I am very proud; I was one of the smallest in my category.” He added: “Support from the team also helped me to achieve gold.”

The Randori Nationals are divided into three categories standing throwing, ground work and an open competition.

Lazars, Idris Birch and Russell Marsh and David Townsend all won gold at  the event in novice ground fighting, yellow belt ground fighting, purple belt standing in blue category and purple belt ground fighting in light blue category respectively.

Both Leon Nell and Katie Palmer won silver in yellow belt fighting in light blue category and yellow belt fighting in the open category respectively.

Joe Kershaw and Gordon Cummings finished the competition with a bronze medal apiece in yellow belt ground fighting and orange belt ground fighting respectively.

Katrine Salomonsen also gained a mention (fourth place) in the green belt standing and ground category.
