Swansea caught Cardiff off-guard and scored the first goal early on.

Cardiff came back strongly to lead by four at half time.

Swansea controlled possession however Cardiff were more clinical in their finishing.

Towards the last quarter, Swansea became more offensive but the Cardiff defence stayed strong.

Swansea was caught frequently on the break as they tried to get back into the game.

Jocelyn Robinson, who gained a scholarship for excelling in lacrosse, scored a significant number of goals for the team.

Captain Emily Jones said: “I’m so pleased and so proud of the team.

“In my fresher year, we lost 14-0 and the year before 30-0.

“So the fact we scored a good few goals is promising.”

Jones said she was excited for her third year in the team adding: “Hopefully we can get the score closer and even have a chance of winning.”

Swansea had a strong year winning the domestic cup and league.

Will Bryan’s side have faced Cardiff twice in the league and drew on both occasions.

They also faced off in the Bucs Lacrosse Trophy in which Cardiff won 8-4.

“In the cup game we had a few injuries so it was tough,” said Bryan.

“The team also seemed to lack drive on the day.”

After knocking out Swansea in the round of 32, Cardiff went on to reach the final but were beaten by a strong Leeds Metropolitan team.

In the league Cardiff matched Swansea, with both sides finishing mid-table with eight points apiece.

But Bryan is very confident about the Varsity clash despite the tight matches they have played this season.

“We will win,” he said. “In both of the league matches with Cardiff we had been leading and let it slip.

“With focus on game day, it won’t happen at Varsity.”

The match takes place at Pontcanna.

Captain Emily Jones is determined to take the win for Swansea and beat the Varsity curse that the women’s lacrosse side have had in recent years.

“I don’t think we have ever won the lacrosse Varsity match against Cardiff,” she said.

“But this year has been exceptional for the team. We have been promoted and won the cup competition, only losing one game all season.

“This year we are hoping to give Cardiff the toughest game they have had yet.”

The team topped the Bucs Western 2A this season, also winning Western Conference cup beating Plymouth Marjons in the final 17-9.

In preparation for the event, Jones has increased the training time for the squad.

This is to ensure the squad know the complex plays which she believes can give Swansea an “advantage” against Cardiff.

Emily Jones has led her side to the top of the table on a run of five straight wins following their season opener defeat to Plymouth Marjons.

“I’m ecstatic,” said Jones. “It is really unexpected, and I hope it continues.”

Swansea took revenge on Marjons when they faced them in the return fixture earlier this month with Jones’ side coming out on top 12-5.

Jones added: “It was really satisfying as they were our biggest competition.”

Swansea have also beaten Cardiff Met, Gloucestershire, and Royal Agricultural College along the way to the top.

With Swansea struggling last season picking up just four points from a possible 27, Jones has pointed to training changes that have revitalised the side’s performances.

“We change captains every year, but also training has been more regimented this year,” said Jones.

“Drills are divided between the captains, and I think we are a little stricter than last year.”

Swansea look set to take the league title with only two games remaining of the season, both against bottom of the table sides.

And Jones is hoping for triple glory this season with her team still in cup and hoping for big things at Varsity.

“Yes, we are aiming to win the cup, but the big one is varsity, we are really hoping to win that,” added Jones.

The women’s side finished the league fourth last season and were looking to improve on that place with the beginning of a new set of fixtures.

Swansea started this season against hotly tipped Plymouth university, who finished second in the western 2A  division last year.

The away trip proved a difficult experience for the Welsh side as they went down 8-3.

Swansea’s second game welcomed the current top side Cardiff Met to their city.

A terrific effort from the team produced the win, as they saw Cardiff off on the back of a 8-3 scoreline.

“We’re doing really well,” said Jones.

“We’re playing the best any of the current team can remember.”

Jones cited the effort and togetherness of the side for their current form.

“In general the whole team have got a good hold of it,” she added.

“I think that’s why we’re winning, the team works well together.”

On the back of their home win against Cardiff Met they travelled over the border to Gloucestershire.

Having just been relegated from the 1A division, Gloucestershire posed a tough test for Swansea.

But Swansea were determined to pick up the points and it was a buoyant squad who travelled back to Wales on the back of a 12-5 win.

Women’s lacrosse is putting itself on the map thanks to their great performances and Jones revealed they have a Welsh international in their midsts.

“Joclyn Robinson, she’s a great player,” she said. “Played in last summer’s world cup for Wales.”

The Welsh side finished a respectable fifth with Robinson scoring six times for her country.

Swansea look set for a good finish this year and Jones is looking towards the league title especially after beating Cardiff Met earlier in the season.

“Oh yes, definitely,” she said.

“Hopefully we can win the league.”
