Swansea University staff who are members of the University and Colleges Union are holding a one-day strike today (Feb 6) over their pay dispute with the employers’ representative UCEA.
Staff are protesting over a 1% pay offer, which they say comes on top of a pay freeze that has seen them lose 13% of the value of their pay over the last five years.
Many lectures have been cancelled and union members are picketing the main entrance to the university.
Today’s action follows a series of one-day and two hour strikes.
A UCU spokesman said: “The employer’s representative, UCEA, continues to insist that its one per cent offer is all that is on the table – even when faced with the revelation that vice chancellors will receive an average pay increase of eight percent. This is so startlingly unfair that UCEA have remained silent on the issue.
“The student union at Swansea University, with insight which seems to have escaped UCEA, have pointed out the double-standards of large pay-rises for vice–chancellors at a time when we are being offered one percent (see most recent issue of Waterfront).”
