DWYNWEN: Y DA, Y DRWG A’R DIFYR
Gan Alun Rhys Chivers
Mae Dydd San Ffolant wythnos i ffwrdd, ond tybed sawl un ohonoch chi wnaeth ddathlu Diwrnod Santes Dwynwen ar Ionawr 25? Ac os gwnaethoch chi ddathlu diwrnod nawddsant cariadon Cymru, faint gwyddoch chi amdani hi a’r traddodiad sy’n dwyn ei henw?
Mae hanesion am gymeriad Dwynwen wedi eu cadw ar lafar ers canrifoedd lawer, ac mae nifer o wahanol fersiynau o’r un stori’n bodoli. Gwyddwn fod Dwynwen yn ferch i Frychan Brycheiniog, a’i bod hi’n un o ddegau o’i blant.
Credir yn un fersiwn o’r stori bod Brychan wedi gwrthod caniatâd i Faelon briodi ei ferch am nad oedd yn hoff ohono. Rhedodd Maelon i ffwrdd ar ôl cael ei wrthod gan Frychan, a rhedodd Dwynwen hithau i’r goedwig, lle cyfarfu ag angel. Cafodd ei phenodi’n Santes y Cariadon yn y fan a’r lle.
Cymeriad annymunol yw Maelon yn yr ail fersiwn, sydd o bosib yn esbonio anfodlonrwydd Brychan i’w ferch ei briodi. Ar ôl cwympo mewn cariad, mynegodd Maelon ei ddymuniad i gysgu gyda Dwynwen, ond ar ôl iddi ei wrthod, fe’i treisiodd. A dyma’r rheswm pam iddi redeg i’r goedwig cyn cwrdd â’r angel. Cafodd Maelon ei rewi gan yr angel, a rhoddodd dri dymuniad i Ddwynwen. Dymunai na phriodai fyth, y deuai’n santes y cariadon i helpu eraill, ac yn rhyfedd iawn, y câi Maelon ei ddadmer.
Mae’r drydedd fersiwn yn honni i Frychan drefnu i Ddwynwen briodi rhywun arall ychydig cyn iddi gwrdd â Maelon. Dywedir bod Dwynwen wedi ymbil ar Dduw i roi’r gallu iddi anghofio am Faelon.
Yn y bedwaredd fersiwn, dywedir bod Maelon wedi dweud nad oedd am weld Dwynwen fyth eto ar ôl iddi ei wrthod.
Pa bynnag fersiwn yw’r un gywir – os yw’r un ohonynt yn wir – gwyddwn fod Dwynwen wedi dod yn santes y cariadon, ac wedi mynd i fyw yn Llanddwyn ar Ynys Môn.
Mae’n bosib mai o draddodiad yr hanes am Ddwynwen a Maelon y daeth y traddodiad o roi llwy garu ar Ddiwrnod Santes Dwynwen. Credai’r Cymry fod y llwy yn symbol o allu’r dyn i ofalu am ei deulu a darparu ar eu cyfer. Ceir gwahanol symbolau ar lwyau caru, gan gynnwys calonnau, olwynion, cloeon a chlychau.
Os na wnaethoch chi ddathlu Santes Dwynwen, pam na ewch chi ati i roi blas Cymreig ar Ddydd San Ffolant? Mae gan Siop Tŷ Tawe lu o anrhegion a nwyddau i ddathlu’r achlysur mewn ffordd Gymreig, gan gynnwys y llwy garu hollbwysig a chardiau wedi’u gwneud â llaw. A pheidiwch anghofio am ‘Lovespoon Gallery’ yn Y Mwmbwls, lle cewch chi lwyau o bob math – rhai am bris rhesymol ac eraill ychydig yn fwy drud.
