AS I stepped into the arena, it felt like I was walking into the Coliseum. Not because of the size of the arena but because of the greatness of the two men about to do battle there. Federer and Nadal are gladiators in men’s tennis. They stand head and shoulders above their rivals and everyone knows that when these two men take to the court something special is going to happen.
Federer came into the match in great form. He hadn’t dropped a single set leading up to the final. He was playing like a man on a mission and Nadal was having a good tournament as well, having dropped only a single set in a gruelling semi-final against Andy Murray.
Federer blitzed to a 1-0 lead in the first game, handing Nadal a love game in the process. This was an indication of how the match would end. Both players held serve while exhibiting brilliant shot making. In the 8th game of the first set, during a deuce point, Federer hit a backhand winner that left Nadal rooted to the ground. Federer then proceeded to break his Spanish rival with another backhand winner that Nadal tried valiantly to get to. Federer’s shot placement was immaculate. Nadal is widely viewed to be one of the best movers on the court, but he lacked the legs on the night and Federer capitalised on this.
You can’t be a champion without having mental resilience; Nadal is one of the great champions of tennis. He came out fighting in the second set and in the 4th game, played some aggressive tennis which paid dividends when Federer sent a backhand long to hand him the break. The crowd got excited in the 5th game when Nadal’s forehand clipped the net, and Federer tripped as he adjusted himself to reach the ball. In the 9th game, Federer changed his racket in a bid to break Nadal back but the Spaniard was having none of it. He moved Federer from one end of the court to another with his shots and closed out the set with a backhand drop shot that Federer failed to control.
Federer started the deciding set in winning fashion, taking the first game with a sublime crosscourt backhand. Nadal rallied to hold his serve with some stunning passing shots. However Federer broke to lead 3-1 in the 4th game when Nadal sent a forehand wide. From then on the man from Switzerland was in control of the match.
Nadal’s recent tactic against Federer has been to target his backhand which can often be a weakness. The Spaniard plays with an incredible amount of topspin which is difficult to deal with especially for players with single-handed backhands such as Federer. This is one of the reasons Nadal is invincible on clay; the topspin makes the ball bounce even higher on that surface. However, Nadal faced a rock solid Federer backhand in the final and he simply could not break it down.
This is the fifth time that Federer has won this tournament, becoming one of only three men to ever do so. This year may not have been Federer’s best, but the absorbing rivalry between these two greats looks set to continue.
