GOLFERS READY TO TEE OFF IN THE CAPITAL FOR VARSITY
The golf season is about to ‘tee off’ in time for Varsity and hopes for success is high. It would be fitting to mention the old saying ‘Practice makes perfect’, especially on the golf course where there is no room for error at this time of the year.
The style of play is varied through the day in the form of singles and doubles.
"Golf is mainly an individual sport but there are a few team formats. We usually play six single matches with each match being worth a point and half for a draw, but last year we started playing a format similar to the Ryder Cup" said Michael O’Brien.
Despite saying that the golf they play is individual, Michael explained the format for when they play matches as a team.
"We have ten players, in the morning we partner up and play ‘foursomes’. Foursomes is a competition format in which teams are comprised of two players each, and the players alternate hitting the same ball, so there are five points up for grabs."
Perhaps it would be seen as important to alternate playing with singles and doubles to best prepare the team for each aspect of the main golf competition for the society.
"In the afternoon we play singles with another ten points available’’ which puts emphasis on the practice of all aspects of golf in order to play to a maximum potential at Varsity.
Last year, the golf team had a successful win, doing so 11-4 after drawing for the previous three years. These results mean that Michael remains unbeaten, and would rightly hope to remain so in his final Varsity before he leaves Swansea. They currently lie fourth in the league table and Michael spoke of their fortunes this season.
"I feel we are underachieving, but we reached the League Cup final. I won it in my first year, so it would be nice to regain the title in my last year" he said.
The ambition for this campaign remains strong as hopes are a for avictory and it would be fitting for him to win in his last game here at Swansea.
"It would be nice to get a big result like last year but we will take a win with any kind of result. We are away this year which might make it a little more difficult but I feel that this is the best team I have played in since I have been at University and I see no reason why we can’t better last years result."
