With just two days to go the official Welsh Varsity 2014 the competition is heating up as the Swansea rugby lads hope to deliver another crushing blow to their Cardiffian counterparts.
Meanwhile the rest of the Green and White army is training hard to bounce back from last year’s 20 -5 defeat in a bid to steal back the coveted shield.
The sporting itinerary for the day is jam packed with over 25 sporting teams eagerly anticipating their Varsity meets, including new additions such as canoe polo, swimming, boxing and shooting.
Stretched across numerous venues from the city centre to Cardiff Bay, the day begins with Badminton at 9 am and ends with the game-to-end-all-games – the men’s rugby match in The Millennium Stadium at 7.30 pm.
With over 10,000 tickets sold already, both Swansea and Cardiff fans are getting ready to support their teams and their captains Elliot Jones for Swansea and Jay Thomas of Cardiff.
Paul Thornburn, who played for Swansea in the equivalent Varsity games, said: “This has become enormous. Sixteen to seventeen thousand enthusiastic people, a great occasion and carnival atmosphere.”
The odds lie heavily in our favour with Swansea winning 11 out of 17 previous Welsh Varsities. Cardiff have achieved victory only 5 times and a frustrating draw in 2001 complete the other 6 matches.
However for many of the players the Welsh Varsity represents something more than just a one-off game with their Red Army rivals as many of those who have graced the pitch in recent years have gone on to have professional or semi-professional careers.
Current Wales internationals Jamie Roberts and Alun Wyn Jones have played for opposing sides of the field and both are big supporters of the Welsh Varsity and continuing the high-level of performance which can be seen there.
The Green and White Army and its individual regiments are sweating it out in at the gym, on the pitch and in multiple training halls to make the 18th Welsh Varsity another victorious year for Swansea.
