ULTIMATE FRISBEE RELISH TEST AGAINST THE BEST
LOSING HEAVILY to an experienced team regardless of the sport would dent anyone’s spirits. However, Swansea’s Ultimate Frisbee team are enjoying the challenge of bridging the gap with their South Wales’ rivals.
This is their fifth season of existence, making them one of the youngest teams in the UK, whereas Cardiff have been playing for 35 years and are the national holders. First team captain Matthew Thomas reckons that they can close the gap even more this year after their 15-4 defeat at last years Varsity.
“We are confident. We have done a lot of training and brought in new players as well as current members improving.”
On the weekend of 19th and 20th March, the team competed in the Outdoor Western Regionals against 27 other teams and finished 9th - three places away from qualifying for the Nationals. This was a result that pleased both the team and Matt.
“We are a new side so coming 9th was a huge achievement” he said.
One of their matches saw them lock horns with the Cardiff’s 2nd team and earned an impressive 12-2 victory, but Cardiff’s 1st team again impressed by finishing third in the competition and therefore qualifying to defend their national title.
“Most of the team are second years that started as freshers last year with little knowledge of the sport. We have all come on a long way since then and we look to carry on this progression to catch up on Cardiff.”
The form may well be with Cardiff, but on a day like Varsity anything can happen.
If you are interested in playing, the club train Monday 7-9pm in the sports hall and Wednesday 2-5pm in Singleton Park or join the Facebook group: Swansea Ulitmate Frisbee.
