SOCIETIES and services officer Tom Upton has become the new president elect of Swansea University students’ union in first preference votes.

Mr Upton won his quota of votes in the first round with 1,607 while Mitchell Theaker took 949, which was 37% of the vote.

There was a huge roar of applause in Diva’s as the result was announced, thanks to a large presence from both his campaign team and Josh Hayman’s who supported him through the week.

A SWANSEA University student jailed for posting racially offensive comments on Twitter about a footballer who collapsed during a game, could be freed on an appeal.

Liam Stacey, 21, from Pontypridd, was sentenced on Tuesday to 56 days in prison over his comments about Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba.  

The 23-year-old collapsed during the FA Cup match against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, March 17, after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Swansea's misery was confirmed by a 68-26 defeat to Southampton.

“I think we played well, but we’ve got a weaker team than Southampton does,” said Dzaro.

“They also practice a lot more than we do.”

Mahoney netted two extremely well-taken goals to send the cup home to Sloth, who last won the trophy two years ago.

He said: “It was amazing, we'd sort of been written off by everyone, we knew we were massive underdogs going into the game and it would be one of our toughest games because Ajax are a really good strong side.

A SWANSEA University student who made racially offensive remarks on Twitter about a footballer who collapsed during a game, has been jailed.

ZAHID Raja has been elected as the education officer for the next year.

ZAHID Raja has been elected as the education officer for the next year.

The final year medical sciences and humanities student secured the position after winning the elections with 64% of the vote to Ian Morgan’s 36%.

“It’s an amazing feeling to be here as your education officer elect,” he said.

Stanley beat her closest opposition, Dan Ryan-Lowes, by 2%, in what was a nail-biting climax which saw her emerge victorious by only 46 votes, 1219-1173.

A tearful Stanley said: “I haven’t processed it yet; I don’t know how to feel.

“I think promoting the small clubs really helped.

Swansea narrowly missed out on promotion last season but captain Daniel Buttifant is relieved to have gone the distance this time.

“It means so much to have led the side to this promotion,” he said.

“We have been working and training towards this for the last three years.

Swansea karate club captain Holly Carey won two gold medals at the UK Open Championships in what she described as her “most successful year to date”.

Carey’s latest medal haul adds to a Welsh championship, Welsh team championship, and a silver medal in the prestigious Scottish Internationals she has already won during her time at Swansea University.

In the UK Open, she weighed in at 68kg exactly which allowed her to compete in both the -68 and +68 event.

Jordan Braddock won two golds as Swansea University’s taekwondo club celebrated a nine medal haul at the ITF student championship in Leeds.

Braddock won his medals in patterns and point-stop sparring and captain Emily Batson said the team is eager for more tournaments.

“Our performance in Leeds has boosted the club’s morale 100 per cent because of the success we had,” she said.

“Everyone is desperate to compete in another tournament.

SWANSEA University students’ union nursey is set to benefit from a £250 donation.

The money, which will be spent on a laptop to help children with their learning, is coming from the Level 2 Spar shop in Fulton House.

Spar received the money from food giant Ginsters as they were the top 10 Ginsters sellers in university shops in the country.

The shop has come fourth in the country as their sales have risen by 55.52%.

Captain Becky Gosney was ecstatic with the win.

“We’re currently second in the league, one point behind Bath and we have ambitions of winning the league,” she said.

“This win today has really boosted us and has given us the confidence to make a real push for the league, as well as the cup.”

A MAN has admitted attacking two female students in toilets on the main Swansea University campus.

The incident happened on Wednesday, November 16 last year in the toilets on the first floor of Fulton House.

Daniel Mclean, 29, pleaded guilty to three counts of common assault, two counts of trespass with intent to commit a sexual offence and three counts of assault with the intention to commit sexual offences.
