Second year medical engineering student Jon May entered with an idea to make laptops last longer by applying a cooling system after he realised what a common problem it was for users of the technology.
“I run a company besides my studies offering laptop repairs for students and the main problem I see day in, day out is laptops overheating and dust clogging the inside.
The student contestants were each given a chance of a four minute pitch followed by a question and answer session by three judges from local businesses.
The SIFE member’s idea impressed the judges enough to win the 1st prize and £250 of vouchers.
Speaking after the event Mr May was delighted with the win and spoke of taking his idea further. I’ll definitely be taking the idea forward and I’ve already spoken to a patent attorney and will be approaching manufacturers soon.”
