SIX NEW SABBs: James, Upton, Hedge, Britton, Jones, Basha all elected to power

LUKE JAMES swept to victory to become the new Student Union President for the 2011/2012 academic year last Thursday night.

James won the first round of voting by 485 votes over Sarah ‘Woody’ Woodvine with James exclaiming that upon learning of his election he felt “quite frankly absolutely ridiculous.”

Despite hearing good news throughout the campaign from students, James was still not complacent in his win.

SU ELECTION - EXIT POLLS / ETHOLIADAU UMPA - POLAU PINIWN

The exit polls were taken from 100 random students from across campus on Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th March 2011.

One in four students were asked to reveal who they voted for. The result in no way indicates the final outcome but aims to give an indication of who is likely to win.

Saturdays; to me, a time to rest, push the complications of last week's lectures aside and take advantage of the freedom of a two day break. Weekends have always been something to look forward to, from primary education to the moment of retirement; so why is the exception made for students, who face a battle with the stress of Saturday exams?

The stresses of the exam period these past few weeks were compounded for some students who found themselves unable to concentrate during exams due to noise from building work on campus.

One student affected asked; “Why on earth were builders allowed to work outside Keir Hardie exam rooms that were hosting exams? They disrupted us for over an hour.”

Education Officer Luke James has launched a campaign to Stop Saturday Exams, one of the policies addressed on his manifesto during the SU election last year.

The campaign was launched at Tooters on Friday, where a team of combined Sabbatical Officers and members of the Exec wore Stop Saturday Exam t-shirts and supplied stickers throughout the night while collecting signatures for a petition.

THE STUDENT Union has voted to commit itself to campaigning against the University holding shares in companies linked to Arms Trading.

The ‘Ethical Investment’ motion, proposed by Education Officer Luke James and seconded by Environment and Ethics Officer Stephen Marshall targeted the University’s significant investments in firms known for the manufacture and provision of military equipment worldwide.
