Education Officer Luke James has launched a campaign to Stop Saturday Exams, one of the policies addressed on his manifesto during the SU election last year.
The campaign was launched at Tooters on Friday, where a team of combined Sabbatical Officers and members of the Exec wore Stop Saturday Exam t-shirts and supplied stickers throughout the night while collecting signatures for a petition.
The campaign proposer, along with a team of supporters have spent the week approaching students around campus, the student village and online, encouraging those affected by the stress of Saturday exams to sign a petition which will be put to University officials; the petition currently lies at almost 1,000 signatures.
Many are concerned that by eliminating Saturday exams the exam period will become more condensed, therefore putting students at the risk of facing more exams in a shorter time scale, however, this is not the case.
Luke James told The Waterfront “I want to see the exam schedule extended so that the two or three Saturdays in the timetable are replaced by week days.
“By ensuring students have weekends to rest and revise we can help fight acute stress. We can also stop students with jobs losing crucial money which pays for course and living costs - for students with no student loans like post-grads two Saturdays off can mean living on the bare minimum for a month.”
He added “I have also talked to student mums this week who are passionate about stopping Saturday exams, they incur extra care costs as well as loss of earnings.
“Students have come to their Students’ Union with these problems and I’m making sure we do something about it.”
Supporting the campaign is first year Genetics student Rhodri Williams, who said “I am fully supporting the campaign, many students experience difficulties at exam time and this is all the more accentuated by not being able to revise for the extra day at the weekend.
“Also, weekends are kept for alternative commitments during the rest of the year, so it seems unfair to excuse these commitments during the exam period.”
