Swansea students have voted overwhelmingly in favour of adding a sports officer to the students’ union from next academic year.

Swansea students have voted overwhelmingly in favour of adding a sports officer to the students’ union from next academic year.

A massive 93% of voters backed the changes in the four-day referendum, with only six percent voting no.

The students’ union will now have a full-time officer team of seven and elections for all those positions including the election of the first ever sports officer will take place in March.

STRIKE action at Swansea University saw the disruption of several lectures as members of the Universities and College Union walked out over proposed pension cuts of up to 15%.

STRIKE action at Swansea University saw the disruption of several lectures as members of the Universities and College Union walked out over proposed pension cuts of up to 15%.

From 7am to midday on Wednesday, November 30, both students and lecturers stood at the gates of the main campus in protest to the pension cuts.

They then proceeded on to the Guildhall where they were joined by thousands of people who were also striking and took part in a rally.

NEXT year could see the first current fee-paying student stand for election to Swansea University's prestigous council.

NEXT year could see the first current fee-paying student stand for election to Swansea University’s prestigous council.

The motion, proposed by student’s union president Luke James at last week’s student forum, was instigated as a protest against the increase in tuition fees to the maximum £9,000 a year.

The motion passed with 95% of students giving their support.

University and Colleges Union strike set to cause disruption to lectures on Wednesday

SWANSEA University academics will join an estimated three million public sector workers in a one-day strike over pensions on Wednesday. 

Members of the University and Colleges Union, the union for academic staff, will join members of 19 other trade unions in what’s anticipated to be the biggest strike for a generation.
