Institute of Life Sciences expands medical centre across campus

THE Institute of Life Science (ILS) has opened a £28.8m expansion to the medical centre at Swansea University.

THE Institute of Life Science (ILS) has opened a £28.8m expansion to the medical centre at Swansea University.

ILS carries out important research on areas such as cancer, obesity and diabetes.

The development of the second phase of the medical centre is hoped to create around 650 jobs.

It houses a £21.6m joint initiative between the College of Engineering and the College of Medicine.

GAMES: Girl Gamers - Not Such A Rare Breed?

WHENEVER I talk about console games in front of a guy who hasn’t spoken with me before, I’m always met with surprise.

There is a huge stereotype that certain games, including the majority of the top-sellers, are only played by men, and as someone who could be described as an obsessive when it comes to games like Red Dead Redemption, Uncharted, Tomb Raider, Gears of War and Assassins’ Creed, among others; this is something that I very strongly object to.

THE FUTURE of the university system in Wales has been placed into doubt with the announcement that a merger of three institutions has been agreed.

Members of the University of Wales Council have been discussing the possibility of the formation of a so-called ‘super university’, with the eventual aim of reducing the number of separate institutions from eleven to six.

Polite robber arrested in Seattle

A man has been arrested on charges of armed robbery in Seattle in the United States.  It has been described by some sources as “one of the politest cases of theft ever caught on camera”.

POSSIBLE PIER CLOSURE

 

MUMBLES PIER is facing possible closure due to safety concerns.

The Victorian structure’s condition is deteriorating, and will be closed if inspectors deem it to be unsafe for public use.  A spokesman from the company which owns the pier, Ameco, commented that the pier is, “reaching the end of its useful life”.

SWANSEA UNIVERSITY has given the Urdd National Eisteddfod a boost, with the announcement of an innovative science partnership at the annual youth festival, to be held in Swansea in May.

GwyddonLe (which means ‘science place’), a flagship exhibition, was piloted last year in Ceredigion and proved to be a huge hit, with its range of exhibitions, experiments and other activities for children and young people.
