They were given a boost before kick off when Aberystwyth revealed they could only field nine players, blaming a busy exam schedule for being two players short.

Ten of the side had exams to prepare for later in the week and could not commit themselves to a game which involved a two-hour coach journey each way.

WALES’ rugby union assistant coach Rob Howley said his days at Swansea University helped shape him to be the man he is today.

Howley, fresh back from Rugby World Cup duty in New Zealand, graduated in 1992 with a BSc in management science.

“University life gives you discipline,” he said.

“It is up to you whether you go to a lecture or not, structure is pretty important to you in life.”

Captain Joe Haworth admitted some harsh lessons were learnt as Swansea were cast aside by UWE ahead of Wednesday'season opener.

Howarth said the team was going through changes but believed they could emulate UWE who play in a league above them.

"We know their first team are very good," he said.

"They play the same brand of hockey we want to get to.

"We are changing systems this year.
