See the wood through the trees...

There is a huge number of societies open to student at Swansea University, so to help see the wood for the trees, here’s my quick selection of some to look out for.

Activity Based

  • The Art Society offers a range of classes from pottery to photography. Contact, art@society.swan.ac.uk
  • Capoeira is a form of dance involving fight and play, which incorporates the body and the soul with happiness. Contact, 200679@swansea.ac.uk
  • Cheerleading; the Swansea Shadows run a main meeting open to all, to improve fitness, learn basic cheerleading and to have fun. The main squad also have additional practices. Contact, shadows@sucs.org or take a look at there website, http://www.sucs.org/~shadows
  • The Conservation Society helps to raise awareness about conservation, as well as regular activities involving trips to the Gower and lively socials.
  • The Duke of Edinburgh Award aims to give young people an opportunity for individual challenge through exciting, constructive and enjoyable activities, which lead to a nationally recognised award.
  • The RAG Society aims to raise money for charity, reaching nearly £20,000 last year! Main events include the famous Beer Race and other events. Contact, rag@sucs.swan.ac.uk or take a look at there website, http://society.swan.ac.uk/rag
  • St Johns Ambulance runs regular first aid classes, during which you can gain first aid qualifications.
  • The Wales University Royal Navy Unit provide nautical training, including going out on HMS Express, organised adventure trips, including skiing and scuba diving. Contact 228718@swansea.ac.uk or take a look at there website, http://www.wales-urnu.org
  • The Yoga Society runs weekly yoga classes with a professional instructor. Contact 205297@swan.ac.uk

Cultural and Religious

  • The Asian Cultural Society organises events and meetings to help celebrate Asian cultural heritage.

  • The Irish Society celebrates all things Irish, in typically Irish ways. Contact, 300202@swan.ac.uk
  • The Islamic Society helps to promote Islam to the wider community for a better understanding. Contact, 184417@swan.ac.uk
  • The Kadampa Buddhist Meditation Society provides Buddhist meditation classes for all those who are interested. Contact 304429@swan.ac.uk
  • The Malaysian Society promotes the heritage culture and tradition of Malaysia. Also helps to look after the welfare and maintain contact with Malaysian students. Contact, msuws@yahoo.co.uk.
  • The Multi-cultural Society brings people from different cultures and societies together. Contact 231263@swan.ac.uk
  • The Pagan Society provides an open and friendly environment for Pagan and spiritual students with a similar outlook.
  • Y Gymdeithas Gymraeg (Welsh Society) promotes the Welsh culture for both Welsh and non-Welsh speakers. Contact ygymdeithasgymraeg@hotmail.com

Intrest

  • Club Kontiki gives assistance to students wanting to raise funds to go abroad in connection with their studies. Contact 301037@swan.ac.uk
  • The Drinking Wine Society hold regular socials and tasting sessions, a like of wine is essential. Contact wine@society.swan.ac.uk
