Student Comedy Awards

Have you ever thought that you could be the next Jimmy Carr or Peter Kay? Well the Revel's Student Comedy Award with chortle.co.uk could be just up your street. The competition includes 12 heats taking place at the competing universities with the Swansea leg being held on 22 March 2007.

The overall winner will pocket £2,500 and all finalists will get the chance to appear at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Furthermore, the university that attracts the most entrants at the biggest audience for its heat will win an exclusive performance by a top comedian at their student union. Face Off on the move

One of Swansea's most popular nights out is to switch venues. Face Off, a night that plays a mix of rock and heavy metal music, is to move from Escape nightclub on Northampton Lane to Sin City, a new venue that will also host live music nights. No date has yet been set for the change of venue.

School apologises to parents

A Swansea school has had to apologise to parents after a four year old girl spent six hours locked inside a minibus after teachers failed to realise that she had not got off the coach. The pupil was only found at the end of the school day. St Joseph's Cathedral School said that it has taken measure to make sure that such an incident cannot happen again.

Man treated after shooting

A 29-year old man was taken to Morriston Hospital suffering from leg injuries after being shot in the Townhill area of Swansea. South Wales Police were called to a house on Dyfed Avenue at 10pm on Wednesday 29 November. Three men aged 25, 22 and 21 were arrested and taken in for questioning. Police are asking anyone with information to contact Swansea Central CID on 01792 456999 or to call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Burns Centre for Swansea and Cardiff

A burns research centre is to be set up in both Cardiff and Swansea. The £10 million centre, which will be the first of its kind in the UK, is a joint initiative by Cardiff and Swansea universities, Morriston Hospital and the Healing Foundation charity.

Police in tower block crime crackdown

South Wales Police made 27 arrests last week as part of an operation targeting tower blocks around Swansea City Centre. Residents at the Dyfatty flats had complained to police about loutish behaviour in the vicinity of the flats. As part of Operation Tower the police used plain clothes detectives, horse patrols and sniffer dogs in the streets surrounding the area. South Wales Police said there were also arrests for burglary, assault and car crime as a result of the operation
