Here again are your "news bites" from Issue 146 - news from around Swansea in small, easy to manage chunks. In this issue - a boy is accused of arson, and everyone is encouraged to vote!

Boy Accused of Arson

An 18-year-old teenager has been accused of starting a devastating fire that cost Penyrheol Comprehensive School £8 million in damages. James Green of Gorseinon and his 17-yearold accomplice are currently on trial at Swansea Crown Court for the incident that took place in March. The two boys destroyed the school's main block after trespassing on the school's grounds and burning a recycling bag. Frank Philips, the prosecutor for the case claims "Both defendants played a part in what went on".

Swansea's New Cinema Now Open

The 29th of September saw the opening of the brand new £3.3 million Vue cinema in Salubrious Place. The Lord Mayor, Chris Holley said "The opening of a new 12- screen cinema in the heart of the city center demonstrates how Swansea has started to deliver on its tremendous potential". The cinema has created an extra 40 jobs and intends to create tough competition for the current Odeon cinema in Parc Tawe.

Missing Swansea Man Found

A missing man last seen in the Brecon Beacons, looking for his dog was found by mountain rescue teams on the Black Mountain range last week. Brian Hurford, 58, was on holiday with his wife in Dan-yr-Ogof caves in the Swansea Valley. Whilst walking his 5-year-old border collie, Badger, he lost his bearings and became lost. The beloved dog has now been found fit and well in Abercrave on Tuesday.

National Fast Day 19th October

Britons all over the UK will be fasting together in aid of 'Build a well in Africa'. Whilst people fast, they will be able to feel the sufferings of the poor, gain a spirit of giving, and reach out to those who are in need of basic essential things, such as water. The university Mosque is inviting everyone back to the Mosque to break the fast, at the end of the day.

Students Should Register Their Vote

Surprisingly many students are forgetting to register their right to vote. It is estimated that more than one in five (22c) students in England and Wales are not registered to vote. If students do not register, they will not have a voice in elections including the upcoming elections for the National Assembly for Wales in May 2007. Jamie McIndo, NUS Wales President said, "Your vote is your voice, and with the Assembly elections coming next May, the student voice needs to be heard loud and clear now more than ever."
