The Beer Race leads to fantastic costumes
Beer Race '06
20th November 2006
The annual Beer Race organised by RAG has broken all previous records for money raised by the event with a whopping £19,000 being raised for several charities.
The money raised last Wednesday night will be distributed among 20 chosen charities at the end of this academic year. This is in addition to the money raised for Breast Cancer Awareness at the Pinkathon which this year topped £1,000.
Among the charities who will benefit are SOS Africa. Matt Crowcombe the UK President of SOS Africa said, "What makes the beer race such a special event is that it provides a few thousand students with an unforgettable experience whilst at the same time raising vital funds for the charities RAG supports. The money raised for SOS Africa in particular, will make a significant difference to the lives of the children we support."
This most popular of student events once again saw over 2,000 students take to the streets of Swansea dressed in ever more imaginative costumes including Christmas trees, dustbins and superheroes. For the first time students from Swansea Institute were also welcome to participate.
Students are required to race through the streets in Swansea drinking half a pint of beer or a soft drink in nine venues before finishing the evening at Time.
President of RAG, Beccie Parr, paid tribute to the society saying, "It is so awesome to see how eager students are to raise money for charity, especially as this event is the largest in the RAG calendar, and needs a lot of hard work and dedication to execute!
"Our RAG team this year are excellent, from committee members to our core raggies, always on hand to do the jobs that are so necessary for this event to run smoothly."
