Go Green Week
20th November 2006
Swansea University's People and Planet society are holding a 'Go Green' week between 27 November and 1 December, with the aim of informing students and staff about environmental issues.
Katharine Lane, President of People and Planet society, said, "we want to do our bit towards tackling global climate change. We are fed up of seeing how wasteful the university is and feel that the university could be more environmentally friendly."
People and Planet will be holding stands throughout the week in Fulton house, where students and staff will be able to pick up 'Go Green' guides, and sign petitions. SUSTRANS, the UK's leading sustainable transport charity will be around campus on Tuesday 28 and Thursday 30 November and will be able to talk to students and staff about where they can cycle in and around Swansea.
On Wednesday 29 November, David Vaughn, one of the investigators for the British Antarctic Survey, will be speaking at the Dylan Thomas Centre at 7.30 p.m. about 'Antarctica and climate change: hot air or chilling reality.'
The week will end with a demonstration at 12 p.m. on Friday 1 December in Dining room C. Students will be able to pick up flags and banners and have their faces painted green, ready to join the protest outside Fulton House.
Katharine Lane, said, "We need to show our VC just how much we want our University to go green. For example most of the computers in the library and most of the lights in the buildings are left on at night because they all have to be individually switched off which takes ages. We need a system where they can be controlled and turned off."
