Miners' Library

Tower Colliery Chairman, Tyrone O'Sullivan, has opened the new home for the South Wales Miners' Library at Swansea University's Hendrefoelan site.The South Wales Miners' Library was founded 33 years ago in a unique partnership between the University and the South Wales area of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), on 20 October 1973. Originally located at Maes-yr-Haf House in Sketty, the Library housed material collected by the South Wales Coalfield History Project, which began in 1971. The Library comprises major parts of nearly 30 miners' institute libraries and 15 private book collections. It is a living testimony to a generation of miners feverently committed to improving the standards of working class education.
