Prof John Brooke and Reverend Anthony Pierce in attendance
Theology lecture proves a success
23rd October 2006
On Monday 9 October, Swansea University hosted a lecture on "Darwin and God: Then and Now" by the world's first Professor of Science and Religion, Professor John Brooke. Professor Brooke, with his good sense of humour and friendly approach, proved popular with a packed Faraday A lecture theatre, with the public requesting him to return next year. The lecture successfully managed to engage both students and the general public, and was proof of how much interest there is in this subject. At one stage, people had to be turned away when the lecture theatre had reached its full capacity.
Professor Brooke said, "We are not dealing with science versus religion. The debate is more polarised now than it was then. Even Darwin struggled with difficult questions."
The lecture was organised by The Reverend Nigel John, Swansea University's Anglican Chaplain. John said, "It was an extraordinary occasion, with a remarkable attendance and an outstanding lecture."
John also said that, "The aim of the lectures is to encourage discussion. We the Chaplaincy want to make a contribution to academic debates in theology."
The next theology lecture will be presented by Dr. Elaine Storkey, Senior Research Fellow at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. Dr. Elaine Storkey will discuss, "Is Christianity Dying in the West". The lecture will take place on Monday 6th November in the James Callaghan Lecture Theatre.
