Here again are your "news bites" from Issue 146 - news from around Swansea in small, easy to manage chunks. In this issue - a swansea journalist is fined, and swansea university hosts the first round of student exec elections.

Swansea journalist fined

A Swansea journalist has been fined £200 by the council for putting a piece paper in his recycling bin together with bottles and cans. A repeat offender, 28 year old Michael Reeves, had been cautioned for putting out his bins a day early, before going on holiday in April and previously putting paper, bottles and cans all in one recycling bag in June. The Evening Post journalist fears that '"People are not going to recycle if they end up in court and it costs them £200."

Merton becomes "patron to the arts"

Paul Merton has recently backed sculptor Robert Conybear in order to enable him to complete his works for a show in Swansea's Mission Gallery. The two met at a Swansea Fringe Festival in 1980. The 'Have I Got News For You' host said, "I've become an old fashioned patron of the arts." The exhibition named 'Inner Portraits' will be available until December 31st.

Woman injured in road accident in Mumbles

A young woman had to be taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries after being mysteriously injured on Oystermouth Road. A motorist said, "We stopped and I heard a bang behind me. The girl was rolling behind me on the floor and it looked like she had been crossing the road." There were even speculations that the woman had fallen from the footbridge near the St David's car park. Another witness said he "heard a bang and then I saw someone go up in the air." The mysterious accident created 45- minute queues down the Oystermouth Road as far down as St Helens Rugby ground.

Swansea student Board free accident

Dave Cornthwaite, a former student from Swansea University who set off in August for his skateboarding trek across Australia from Perth to Brisbane, has injured his knee during a photo shoot in Adelaide. Cornthwaite called it a "freak accident". He cut his foot on a piece of metal and had to have seven stitches. He also has to wait a week for it to heal. Student exec. elections

Swansea University hosts its first student executive elections on Tuesday 24 October. Elections will be held in Fulton House between 10.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m. The election results will be announced the same evening, and only mature students over 21, with a valid 2006- 2007 N.U.S card will be permitted to vote. Five U.K delegates, four Wales delegates and 10 executive position must be filled.
