The Geography Society's First Social
The Geography Society's First Social

Back in Action

29th January 2007

New Year and a new society, well at least a reformed one!

The Geography Society is once again up and running and already has a highly successful membership of 175 students. President Jon Bevan got the society together again, along with the help of some fellow friends from the Geography department and they hope to "make the society better than ever."

After the initial sign-up session on 1st December the society had a Christmas gathering in Que Pasa welcoming over 100 new members, including staff and students. The society had previously petered out, but they are now back and ready to go. One of the principal reasons for the society is to offer members access to student representatives who work for the student body.

The Geography department is keen to find out how students are getting on with the course and are always open to suggestions as to how best improve the department. Student representatives are a great way of understanding how students are feeling about their courses and is an important part of the society.

On a more light-hearted side, the society plays a large role in organising socials. This semester they have many things planned including a Spring Ball, which they hope will be a dinner/dance, to possibly be held at the Oxwich Bay Hotel.

They also hope to run various trips in and around Swansea to take in the local scenery from a geographical perspective. As well as having a Rounders rematch between the Physical and Human Geography sections of the department, involving both students and lecturers.

In the future they also hope to help raise money, through events that they organise, to go to a range of local charities.

Jon Bevan said that they were keen "to give something back" to the local community. The society is open to all and is always keen to welcome new members.

The society hopes to have a website up and running by the end of the term, but until then if you want to find out more information about the society then please check out their myspace page at www.myspace.com/swanseageogsociety or alternatively you can drop them an email at: uwsgeography@hotmail.co.uk
