News in brief from Swansea University. This issue, Huw Edwards delivers a talk to raise money for charity, the Swansea University Business Club holds an informal meeting and several SU graduates and staff are recognised in the Queen's New Year's Honours.

Huw Edwards

The BBC's chief news presenter, Huw Edwards, delivered a talk on 'Listening to the Viewer' on the 26 January, as part of the on going Public Theology Lecture series in Lecture Theatre Faraday A.

Edwards recieved a warm welcome, from students, staff and the general public. An admission fee of £5 was charged with all the proceeds going to ward seven (for the care and rehabilitation of stroke patients) at Singleton Hospital.

SUBiz Meeting

SUBiz, the Swansea University Business Club, is having an informal meeting in JC's at 7.30pm on Thursday 8 February. The club is a collaboration between the Student Union and the Department of Research and innovation.

Students wanting to get involved don't need any business skills or be an expert in any particular area, as support is provided for those involved. Students from any department are welcome to get involved.

Swansea New Year's Honours

A Swansea University graduate who cofounded Acorn Computers and an Emeritus Professor of History have been recognised in the Queen's New Year's Honours list 2007.

Graduate and honorary fellow Professor Andrew Hopper becomes Commander of the British Empire (CBE) for services to the computer industry. In his industrial career, he co-founded a dozen companies, two of which have floated on the stock markets. Gareth Elwyn Jones, Emeritus Professor in the univeristy's department of history, becomes a Member of the British Empire (MBE) for services to education in Wales.
