Issue 152

Society President, Mark Houghton
Multi cultured
12th February 2007
The Multicultural society is one of the latest societies to join Swansea's long and distinguished list of societies. Yet despite being a completely individual society it is designed to bring together the mix of cultures that can currently be found on campus.
This latest adventure by French society president Mark Houghton came about due to a random meeting at Xtreme radio. He was asked to go on to the radio and play various examples of French music, whilst there he ran into a friend who just happens to be the president of the Asian society. A couple of drinks later and they had decided that it would be a really good idea to introduce a society that could combine all of the cultural societies at Swansea in a non-prejudice environment.
After a visit to Owen Morris the Treasurer, the society was formed and already boasts a membership of 80 students. The committee itself is made up of members from various societies, including the French, Welsh, Asian, Islamic and last year's Spanish society. The main aim of the society is to group everyone together, regardless of race, sexuality, religion, age and so on. They really want to promote other cultural societies and to learn about each other's cultures.
Their first social was held on Monday 29 January in Revolutions and was run as a French evening. There was a very large turnout at the event where they played a range of French music, as well as some Welsh tunes.
The evening was largely run as an initial social and they hope in future to further develop these events into a real learning experience of other cultures.
They hope in future to also get the highly active Chinese Society involved in the events of the society, especially when you consider the high proportion of Chinese students that attend Swansea.
