Nurses go to RCN conference

12th March 2007

Over the Easter period the Nursing Society are taking a group of roughly 40 nurses to The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Congress on April 17 for their annual nursing conference.

The RCN hold one of the UK's largest nursing conferences and exhibitions, this year it is being held in Harrogate, Yorkshire. Each year at Congress important student issues are on the agenda. Issues are normally debated on Students Day, and last year more than 1000 students travelled to Bournemouth to take part in Congress 2006 to have their say. This year's Student's Day is to be held on April 17 and as the name suggests, it is a whole day dedicated to student nurses.

There are several events taking place on the day, including a student rally celebrating students as the change makers of the future.

There will be a chance to meet the new RCN General Secretary, Dr Peter Carter, OBE, and hear about the current changes taking place to their education. Students will be represented by two guest speakers, Andrea Simpson and Helen Boothman. Andrea is a midwifery student who is campaigning for better student bursaries and Helen will be talking about her project to improve the student nursing experience.

There will be a selection of free educational seminars aimed at students and an exhibition, with 200 stands showcasing the latest health care products and jobs. As well as career guidance on CV writing, filling out application forms and not forgetting the student reception celebrating uniforms through the ages followed by the annual student ball. More information can be found at http://www.rcn.org.uk.

To go to this event with the Nursing Society you must be a student nurse at Swansea University, a member of the RCN and a member of the Nursing Society. RCN and Nursing Society membership can be easily obtained in time for the event.

The event promises to be both interesting and exciting due to the range of events and talks that will be on offer.

This will be especially true when you consider the current issues surrounding nursing and the NHS. If you would like anymore information about the trip or the society itself then please contact them at: nurse_soc@yahoo.co.uk.
