SSWIGS camp '08

12th March 2007

A few weeks ago the Students of Swansea in Guides and Scouts (SSWIGS) went on a national camp to Loughborough whilst there they attended the annual general meeting and put in a bid to host the summer camp in 2008. They are proud to say that they managed to win the bid and are now busily preparing for the summer of 2008.

The Guide and Scout association holds three annual camps during the year at various places around the country. At these camps a wide range of events, trips, crafts and other activities are laid on for those taking part in the camping trip.

During their Loughborough camping trip they partook in many activities including; mountain boarding, pot holing, upside down abseiling and archery. They also went on a few themed pub crawls, visited Donnington Motor Museum and completed some Australian themed crafts.

The highlight of the weekend was the traditional fancy dress barn dance at the end of the weekend. The society decided to dress up as a cricket pitch, with various members dressed as the stumps, the ball and other aspects of a pitch, with all this effort they won the fancy dress competition! At every different camp there is a theme, in Loughborough it was 'down under' hence the Australian crafts and the creative cricket pitch fancy dress.

The society has already started making plans for 2008 and has decided on an 'under the sea' theme, due to Swansea's proximity to the beach. They also hope to incorporate the beach into many of the activities that they are hoping to run, as well as holding pub crawls, mountain biking and a possible trip to the Oakwood theme park.

They are hoping to use the Silver Cross Camp site, which is just outside Swansea, to accommodate the 150/200 people who will be descending on Swansea for the weekend. The weekend will most likely take place in early July 2008 and will involve two nights and three days of camping. The society is also hoping to join forces with their Guide and Scout counterparts in Bangor, Aberystwyth and Cardiff to make it a truly Welsh event.

As well as going on camps the SSWIGS also hold their own events and have an active role in the community.

Many of them have links with Brownies, Raindows, Guides, Scouts and Cub groups in and around the city. Giving them help and support as and when they need it.
