Uni Roundup 154
Uni roundup: Issue 154
12th March 2007
A round up of news from universities across the world. In this issue, a Devon student fails in his sprout eating world record attempt and a school in Florida locks students out of the toilets.
Sprout record attempt failure
A Devon student who hoped to set a world record by eating the most Brussel sprouts in a minute has failed. Richard Townsend, 24, a student at Exeter University, fell seven short of the target of 43, which was set in December 2003. Townsend, who had eaten a plate of sprouts every day for the last six months, said he just "lost it". After cramming the sprouts into his mouth with a toothpick, he said: "I do not think I could face another sprout for a few days."
School locks students out of loos
Students who attend Freedom High School in New Tampa, Florida, say this week, freedom is in short supply. Ever since vandalism showed up on bathroom walls across campus, school administrators have locked up all but one set of restrooms throughout the school day. Students say the issue is creating long lines and causing some students to be late or miss class completely.
Muslims find school kosher
About half the students who attend the Jewish primary school, King David, in Birmingham, are Muslims, and in fact, their parents work hard to get them in because they so respect the school's ethos and its halal-like diet. All students learn Hebrew, recite Jewish prayers, and celebrate Israeli independence, but there is also a Muslim prayer room and Muslim teachers are hired for Ramadan.
