An Xtreme night
08th May 2007
Xtreme is holding its annual awards night on Thursday 10 May; we caught up with Treasurer Matt Bond to chat about the evening.
The main part of the evening will be taking place in Pitcher and Piano on Wind Street, there is a formal dress code and they will be receiving a top notch meal.
There are lots of awards up for grabs this year including; best show, best new show, the King and Queen of Xtreme, best non music show, best specialist show, best cock up award and best achievement award to name but a few.
The night will also involve the announcement of the society's elections, which will decide the committee for next year. The hustings for the elections are taking place on 8 May at Xtreme's AGM, with the actual voting taking place the following day on Wednesday 9 May.
Xtreme has not always been a successful society, a few years ago it was at risk from being shut down, but fortunately it has been able to turn its fortunes around and now has one of the largest memberships within the Students Union.
Every year they get a huge response from the freshers' fair of people wanting to sign up for the society, most of course wanting their own show and slice of air time. Bond says, "We always get an amazing response and we try to be as fair as possible to make sure that everyone gets some air time at some point during the year."
Even though broadcasting is the main way to get involved with the radio there are various other positions and responsibilities at the station; they are always on the look out for people who can deal with promotions, sports and news to keep listeners up-dated, with the various relevant reports and what the station is up to. This gives people lots of different perspectives to the radio industry.
The station itself runs twenty four hours a day, which is pretty impressive when you consider that it's a station run by students. So how do they manage to achieve this? "We have prerecorded shows that run between 8pm-midnight and then after that the system cuts in and plays random songs from our play list." Treasurer Matt Bond said.
During the day the show is run between 8am-8pm and is filled by two hour slots, which provide a range of music for all tastes.
Recently the station has run highly successful reports on the elections and Varsity. Bringing listeners up-dates on how the election was progressing, by broadcasting throughout the night. They also sent lots of reporters to Varsity so that they could send back up to the minute reports on how the matches were going.
