SGM goes multiplatform

08th May 2007

The latest Student General Meeting took place on Thursday 3 March, this time seeing motions passed on a variety of subjects from LGBT (lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual) rights to decisions on how the SGMs themselves are made available to students.

A motion was passed creating new access to the SGM meeting as the minutes of SGM meetings are now to be recorded and uploaded onto the Student Union website. They will be available as audio files for those people interested in exact decisions of previous meetings. It is intended the files will be available for five years. This raised some opposition, as after three years the minutes are officially useless to future decisions and it was argued that it would be a waste of server space, but the motion passed without this amendment.

Interestingly, this was the first SGM to be recorded and will eventually be uploaded onto the site, and was a source of great amusement for Owen Morgan, when a latecomer arrived with a carefully chosen comedy phrase as he entered, not realising it was all being recorded, a fact that the president cheerfully made clear.

The building work taking place behind Union house and Kilvey was also brought up at the end of the meeting. Though building work is behind schedule and the noisy work is yet to be undertaken, the student council do plan to liaise with the builders, and to attempt to monitor sound levels.
