News in brief from Swansea and the surrounding areas. In this issue: £400 worth of hoodies stolen from the uni's Discovery charity, Swansea Council plans high-tech information screens for city centre and a march is held against closure of a unit at Morriston Hospital.

A matter of life and death in Swansea

Around 600 health campaigners and health workers held a march and rally in Swansea on 28 April to protest at the threat to services in the area. The neurosurgery unit at Swansea's Morriston hospital is threatened with closure and relocation to Cardiff.

Swansea postman inquest

The body of Swansea postman, Rory Ryan, 30, was recovered off the coast of Mumbles near Swansea in 2004. An inquest is currently being held after his father, Carl Ryan, complained about the way the case had been handled. Ryan was said to have died probably as a result of a concoction of drugs and alcohol found in his system by the coroner.

Holidays banned during term

Parents in Swansea face a ban on taking their children out of school for holidays as education authorities lose patience with pupils missing lessons. Schools feel that pupils are often absent for cut-price family breaks in term time and are warning parents they don't have a right to time off.

Swansea plans city super screens

High-tech information screens are to be erected across Swansea city centre. Visitors will have the chance to catch up on community news and public information broadcast on multi-media signs at landmark locations. The multi-media facilities will also be used to inform the public during emergencies.

The project will be fully managed and paid for by a private company at no cost to Swansea Council.

Stadium parking fears played down

Stadium managers and police have played down fears that travellers occupying a car park will cause traffic chaos ahead of Swansea City's climax of the season. Stadco, the company that runs the stadium have confirmed that Swansea Vale park and ride facility will be in operation for Saturday's match with the usual staffing.

Hoodie Theft

23 Discovery hoodies were stolen on Wedsnesday 2nd May from a volunteers car in Carlton Terrace. Together they cost almost £400 So, if you have any knowledge of where these might be, please inform the local police or the Discovery office. (www.swansea.ac.uk/discovery)
