The ULTIMATE Club

This is the newest addition to sport at Swansea University and I think it is here to stay. Can you imagine a football game without a referee? Or a rugby game where the opposition applaud a good passage of play? Ultimate Frisbee does exactly that.

Before I could talk to Rhys Gambold (club captain) I had the opportunity to observe the clubs second training session this year. The air was thick with flying disks and everyone was enjoying themselves. In my 3 years at Swansea I've been involved in a few modest teams and have some knowledge of most in the AU. I can say in all sincerity that this club has the potential to be big. It is suited to Swansea perfectly. Sport at this university is epitomised by the students who attend here, diverse and intense. Ultimate Frisbee is here to cater for you the student. I asked Rhys to describe the game in 2 sentences;

"If you can imagine a game that is half netball and half football then you have Ultimate. It is all about spirit; it's a social game that doesn't require a lot of effort to run." (The game is usually shortened to 'Ultimate')

What can a fresher/beginner expect?

"Three things; to enjoy themselves, to get fit doing it and enjoy a brilliant social life."

The club enjoyed an excellent fresher's fair with 80 contacts and 45 full members. In fact the only down side was the queue to join the AU.

Apart from this Rhys feels that the club is starting to enjoy the benefits of being affiliated to the Athletic Union, "...Simon (AU president) has been very helpful so far."

If you are worrying about finding a club that suits you at university I can thoroughly recommend the Ultimate club.
