Freshers' Fayre proves to be a big success

The large white marquee in front of Fulton House played host to this year's Freshers' Fayre, a two day event on 26th and 27th September. The annual event is an opportunity for student societies and sports clubs from within the university, and local businesses and companies to make contact with new students and informing them of what they have to offer.

Dan Hart, manager of Progress Surf, a company keen to encourage interest in surfing in the UK, said that, "a lot of our business definitely comes from students, and we see these events as really important."

Students' Union President, Owen Morgan, is keen to stress the importance of the event to students, saying that the attending businesses offer students "great opportunities for their future, such as placements, volunteering and graduate jobs."

The Fayre also provided an opportunity for Freshers to explore the many varied societies and clubs that the university has to offer. The Athletics Union had long queues on both days, with many students eager to buy an AU card, enabling them to participate in AU clubs at the university.

By undertaking work within the local area, new students can add something to and learn about the community, allowing companies to return to Freshers' Fayre every year. A member of staff at VUE Cinemas commented that, "The student population was definitely taken into account. We have targeted students wanting both volunteering and graduate jobs."
