RAG Beer Race Packs Out Wind Street
19th November 2007
On Wednesday 14th November, 1600 students took to the streets to take part in the RAG 'Beer Race'- one of the biggest nights out of the student calendar. Last year's race raised £19,000 for the RAG society funds to share between 20 chosen charities, along with the money raised from other RAG events.
Competitors took on the challenge to drink half pints and prizes went up for grabs for those that come up with the most interesting fancy dress, and the team that completed the race in the fastest time. Congratulations to the Transformers for winning best costume and Team America for the fastest time.
The race circuit began in Lava Lounge, a new addition to the race, and continued down Wind Street. Revolution, Idols, Walkabout, Yates's, Chicago Rock Café, Ice and Pitcher and Piano all opted to take part this year with racers finishing in Play.
An unfortunate mix-up left RAG committee members fuming as the local Police did not close Wind Street to vehicles. The Police eventually turned up to block the road off, however there had already been a huge risk with speeding cars passing packed pavements.
The quality of the costumes appears to increase year upon year as more and more people make an effort. Highlights this year included a party dressed as Facebook homepages, a Titanic ship, a 'BOB' Student Village bus team and Crayola crayon sets. Sheryl Earnshaw, the woman behind this year's Beer Race, sent a massive 'thank you' to all the RAG committee, Russell, Harry from Play for covering publicity costs and to Joe from Lava Lounge for getting stewards' t-shirts done. Sheryl also deserves huge praise for her work to organise what was a great night out for students and effective fund-raiser.
Sheryl told The Waterfront: "I hope everyone enjoyed this night as much as I did. Please remember to look out for other RAG events and don't forget that we are always looking for new members.".
