International Relations essay prize

A student from Swansea University has won the highly coveted award for international relations.

Beki Quinlan, who has recently started her second year, was awarded the Baylis and Smith prize for an outstanding first year essay.

The prize, awarded by Oxford University Press (OUP), consists of £100 worth of book vouchers, and is open to all U.K. universities that teach International Relations.

The award was established in 2005 to celebrate the success of a textbook written by professor John Baylis and his co-author Steve Smith. The book, The Globalization of World Politics: An Introduction to International Relations, has sold over 160,000 copies in over 30 different countries and has since been translated into an array of different languages.

The Oxford University Press believes that, "In creating and supporting this prize, OUP is delighted to be able to give something back to students excelling in a subject that is becoming ever important in our rapidly changing world."

The award is particularly important to Swansea University as one of the authors; Professor John Baylis is a former Head of the Department of Politics and International Relations.

After receiving the award, Beki said that, "I was completely shocked to receive the award. I had absolutely no idea that I had submitted the winning essay. The books are certainly going to come in useful."

Professor John Baylis said, " I congratulate Beki on her excellent essay. She is a deserving winner of this year's prize."
