Preview: The Glynn Vivan Art Gallery
29th January 2007
The exhibitions include Zoo by Richard Billingham, Employee of the Month by Russell Maggs, and Inflections by Caroline Broadhead and Emma Woffenden.
Zoo, which will be shown between 27 January - 22 April 2007, is Richard Billingham's exhibition of video works and photographs. Billingham filmed in zoos in various countries to display the impact of confined spaces on animal behaviour.
It is a deep look into these animals and their relationship with their public audience and the effects captivity has had on them.
Russell Maggs' exhibition will be displayed between 27 January - 15 April 2007. Employee of the Month is a look into the decline of the manufacturing industry, its replacement by mass consumerism, and the changes and effects it has on everyday lives. It includes application forms, health and safety directives, risk assessments, and much more. Maggs' asks us to consider what the role of the artist and the nature of art is within a mass consumerist culture.
Caroline Broadhead and Emma Woffenden and their individual creative encounters have received international acclaim, and now their work Inflections will be presented between 8 February - 1 April 2007 at the Gallery. Broadhead's work involves the play between "visibility and invisibility, space and matter, substance and non substance," and includes a large wall-piece composed of multiple mirrored fragments.
With Woffenden, she explores the power of myth and archetype and her characters take form in simple shapes each with a distillation of personal references and experiences.
Admission is free for all three exhibitions. For more information call 01792 516900, or fax 01792 516913, or e-mail glynn.vivian.gallery@swansea.gov.uk
