Beam me up Scotty!

Our very own Jamie Nemeth is the president of the Sci-fi Society; we caught up with him to find out about this extra terrestrial society and what flies his space ship!

The society as it currently stands, has been reformed,after an eight year absence at Swansea. You may be forgiven for thinking that the Sci-Fi Society is full of geeks, who spend their lives going from one Star Trek convention to the next, but that is not what they're all about. In fact they are perhaps one of the most relaxed societies, who simply like to get together to enjoy screenings of their favourite programmes.

The society has attracted people from all sorts of backgrounds and currently has a healthy membership of around 50 people. Meeting regularly on a Tuesday evening to watch whatever happens to take their fancy, Jamie tells us that it, "really helps to expand your knowledge of the subject."

In future they hope to also include sci-fi novels to the list of things that they cover, as well as trying to get in outside speakers and perhaps an excursion to a convention of some form. Recently the society had there Christmas social in Varsity, where they had there own separate part of the bar.

For Jamie the funniest moment was having a bouncer tell a drunkard, "You can't come in unless you're sci-fi!"

As for Jamie himself, his love of sci-fi stems from an early fascination with special effects, as well as the futuristic out look of the many sci-fi programme's that grace our television screens, and like any typical bloke the love of gadgets. Perhaps one of the most incredible things that Jamie revealed was, "Of course, I haven't seen Star Wars." Now I thought that most people would have seen at least one episode, but apparently not! Which is some feat for the president of the Sci-Fi Society; so what does it for Jamie? "Star Trek! Live long and prosper."
