People and Planet support Fairtrade

26th February 2007

On Friday 2 March, the People and Planet society will be holding a Fairtrade event in JCs as part of Fair Trade fortnight.

Swansea University's Fairtrade Friday will be a day of giveaways and competitions, including a banana eating contest.

Katherine Lane from People and Planet, said, "the challenge will be to see who can eat the most Fairtrade bananas in one minute! You can challenge your friends or come and challenge one of the sabbaticals. The prizes will be chosen from a selection of Fairtrade goodies!"

Angles Food Hall on the first floor of Fulton House will also be supporting the foundation. Throughout the fortnight they will be giving away free Fairtrade fruit with every salad purchase and selling subsidised Fairtrade cookies. There will also be a Fairtrade chocolate and Fairtrade fresh juice tasting session on Tuesday 6 March.

Behind all the fun and games, the fortnight of nationwide events aims to promote the Fairtrade foundation. The foundation was founded in 1992 and aims to make sure that, "disadvantaged producers in the developing world are getting a better deal." Lane further adds, "Fairtrade is important because it gives farmers a chance to earn a fair wage that is regular and get what they deserve for their crops. The Fairtrade farmers then have enough money to create a better standard of living for themselves and their families."

Lane was keen to promote the fact that by buying Fairtrade products, it is not just the farmer who is benefiting . Lane added that, "you are helping out entire communities and improving the lives of many people."
