Sandfield students attacked

26th February 2007

At about 9.10pm on Tuesday 21 Feburary, two Swansea University students were attacked in Sandfields. The two girls who wished only to be identified as Amy and Megan were walking parallel to St. Helens when two girls wearing hooded jumpers, with the hoods up to avoid identification, tried to snatch their bags from them.

Amy, a law student at Swansea University, spoke of the incident, "I was shocked, my bag has everything in it, my phone, my wallet, my Ipod and my diary. I didn't realise I was being mugged at first. People should be more aware of where they go, I wouldn't want this to happen to anyone else. The police were very helpful, though."

An email was sent to all students the following morning to remind people to be aware of their surrounding when travelling out and about. The email also wanted to inform students that they can obtain further safety advice from the Student Safety Officer whose office is situated on the third floor of Union House.

Miles Goodman, Welfare Officer for the Students' Union commented that "the Students' Union presently have campaigns promoting student safety and we are asking students to walk home in groups where possible. I am saddened by this event and the Students' Union will continue to actively promote student's safety."

Anyone with any information should contact the campus police on 01792 295882.
