Student General Meeting
26th February 2007
On February 22, the Student General Meeting took place in Faraday Lecture Theatre A at 6 p.m.
All five of the motions were passed. These included: an Amendment to Motion 702 (stop the fascist BNP), an Amendment to Motion 819 (Governance Reform in Students' Unions), an Amendment to motion 502 (stop the war), an Amendment to motion 622 (Higher Education funding) and finally a motion aimed at mandating the President and Education Officer to write a letter calling for the library to install drinks and snack machines. The motion also called for the library to check the status of students in the Postgraduate computer room to ensure that they are in fact Postgraduate students.
At the end of the meeting Mathew Tavoularis questioned during any other business, how the Students' Union had spent over £600,000 since 1998. As a result Stuart 'Chugga' Jones stated that, "We put funds back into the Students' Union for students as we are a charity."
Mathew also stated that the Finance Committee had not met for the past two years. Owen Morris said that, "historically the Finance Committee had only dealt with societies. In 2004 to 2005 it was deemed unnecessary to hold one due to impracticality. I did want to create one in 2005-2006 but I had little time to do so. Thanks to the support of the Executive Committee it has now been reformed."
