Sabb elections are coming

29th January 2007

Notice has been given for the Elections for Sabbatical Officers for the academic year of 2007 - 2008. The Six electable positions for the Officers are President, Treasurer, Welfare Officer, Education Officer, Women's Officer and International Students Officer.

Nominations will open on Thursday, 1 February at midday and will close a fortnight later on Thursday, 15 February at 5pm. The Deputy Returning Officer, Stuart Rice, said, "It is the time of year where we are looking for people to come forward as candidates for the sabbatical posts and to vote in the elections.

These posts could have a real impact and a positive benefit on our Student Union, so get off the sofa and get involved!"

The elections will be held in the Hendrefoelen Student Village between the hours of 1pm. and 7pm. on Wednesday 14 March and on the University Campus between the hours of 9.30 a.m. and 7pm. on Thursday 15 March. The results will be available on the 15 March from 10pm. onwards.

A valid 2006-2007 student card is required to vote. Male students are forbidden to enter as candidates for the position of Women's Officer and U.K residents are forbidden from entering as candidates for the position of International Students Officer.

When asked about last year's campaign, Kylie Bartelli said that, "I remember how much fun it was to meet so many new faces. It was exciting both to meet the other candidates and to spend time meeting other fellow students and finding out their views."

In terms of coping with the pressure associated with being a Sabbatical Officer, Emma Bartlett said that, "with that pressure comes the satisfaction that you are keeping the Students' Union moving forward."

Miles Goodman believes that students, "should not feel intimidated about standing. Back yourself and go for it. Also decide on the major points of your campaign early and stick to them."
