Wales’ Deputy First Minister, Ieuan Wyn Jones visited Swansea University on March 29 to formally announce funding of £15m for the second campus project on Fabian Way.
The announcement comes only a day after Senior Management’s proposal to cut the Modern Foreign Language Department staff by more than 50% was rejected by the University Council.
The Bay Science and Innovation campus will be built on a 69 acre site on the outskirts of the city as part of a project which it is estimated will bring in excess of £3bn to the regional economy in the next 10 years, and which will create thousands of jobs.
The new campus will house a research and testing facility in partnership with car giants Rolls-Royce, as well as teaching and research facilities in the fields of Engineering, Business and Economics, Maths and Computer Science. There will also be new residential accommodation at the new site.
Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council had previously given planning consent for the construction of the new campus.
Announcing the Assembly funding, the Deputy First Minister said, “When I published my economic renewal programme in June of last year, I made it clear that the relationship between the government, universities and industry was absolutely crucial to delivering long-term sustainable improvements to the Welsh economy.”
“This scheme seems to us to be the catalyst for what could well be the largest economic project throughout the United Kingdom. This campus will bring together academic research, industrial research and development, postgraduate students and undergraduates, all of them on the same site on the shores of Swansea Bay.”
Speaking exclusively to The Waterfront, the Deputy First Minister said, “What we’ve decided to do in economic renewal is to concentrate on key sectors and within that, to concentrate also on certain research and development projects which fit into those key sectors, and that can only be delivered if we work with universities and industry to deliver that agenda.
“We want to drive the Welsh economy and support innovation. And obviously the proposal here for the second campus fits in very much with the agenda we’ve set out in our renewal programme.”
Speaking about the Welsh Assembly funding, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Richard B. Davies told The Waterfront, “It’s absolutely fundamental. The scale of this project means that it was not possible for our University to be able to raise, on its own, all the money necessary.
“We have been talking to the Assembly for a while about help and we are really extremely grateful in these difficult financial times that the Deputy First Minister has, because of his enthusiasm for this project, been able to find money from his own department budget to enable it to go ahead.
“We are exceptionally grateful and exceptionally cheerful today. This makes all the difference. We will now be able to focus on delivering the project.”
