Intramural Football - 7th’s score for fun and flying high in the league

The league shaped up nicely in favour of the Uni 7th’s last week as Team Sloth lost their first game of the season, putting them in the same position as the 6th’s, Ajax and this season’s surprise contenders, Sketty Bolognese.  Sketty had a tough match against Urine Trouble and claimed the only goal of the game to win 1-0, despite the goalmouth excitement in the last minute where Urine Trouble missed a penalty and the following rebound into an open net.  Ajax barely left 2nd gear as they tamed the Blazin’ Bonville Bulldogs, winning 8-2.  A surprisingly comfortable win was on the cards for SPR as they beat Hardly Athletic 6-2, with Hardly losing their first game of the season as a result of the game.  With games now being played twice a week for the remainder of the season, things are about to get tense and one wrong result can cost a team the league trophy!

Photosynthesis 2-8 Uni 7th’s

The 7th's have one hand on the league trophy after beating Photosynthesis 7-2, and remaining the only team to win every game in the league. 

The 7th's took the lead through Michael Pritchard but Photosynthesis replied and ended up with a 2-1 lead after

goals by Justin George and a lethal free-kick by Damian Paget.  The drama continued before the end of the half and the 7th's

equalised from a corner, with Pritchard getting his 2nd.  The floodgates really opened in the second half and the goals were

shared between Dai Watkins and Lewis Clare, with Watkins getting a hat trick and Clare with a double.  Clare had a chance on

a plate in the final play, but failed to materialise it to get a third for himself.  7th's Captain Joel Stevens-Leach was

pleased with his performance, particularly with Mikey Taylor who

volunteered to go in goal on the hour mark after their goalkeeper was forced off due to injury.  After a convincing win, the 7th's can be happy with their position knowing they

currently have the upper hand on all other league competitors.

SPR 6-2 Hardly Athletic

The weather was a big factor in Hardly’s first big loss in the league this season, in a heavy scoring game against SPR.  A quiet first half ended at 1-1 with Jassim Al-Jaber scoring off a rebound in the Hardly box, but Hardly edged back through an Alex Doney equaliser.  SPR came out stronger in the second half and scored two early goals by Sortis Pats and Rhys Thomas.  Doney once again replied for Hardly and they battled strong through a tense quarter of an hour where it seemed an equaliser for Hardly was on the cards.  However, SPR unleashed a new box of tricks and scored three goals to wrap the game up, with two coming from Toby Idris and Daniel Francis finding the back of the net to make the full time score 6-2.

Geography 6-3 Team Armadillo

Geography recorded an impressive win in a high-scoring game against Team Armadillo, despite missing a number of key players.  However, they began the game on the back foot after going two goals down.  The Geography keeper failed to deal with a well struck shot by the Armadillo attack and was again under pressure moments later as a defensive error by Geography led to a well-executed penalty to make the score 2-0. 

Geography bounced back into a game after Will Cook found the back of the net after a goal mouth scramble and Elliot Coard pulled the game back to 2-2.  Geography’s defence slipped up again and the game ended up with an exciting 3-2 half time score-line.  With a number of substitutions at half time and during the second half and the difference was visible as Damien Garvey returned to the back line to reassure the defence as the captain Luke Nash came on to lead the attack.  Looking comfortable in possession again, Elliot Coard scored his second of the match with a back post header from a long Tom Waters throw, and then completing his hat trick with a thumping shot from a James Taylor cross, putting

Geography into the lead for the first time in the match.  Geography secured the victory through a first goal of the season for Dan Risk and an own goal, primarily caused by a threatening Tom Waters long throw.  Luke Nash expressed his delight at the victory, despite being worried about defensive lapses, saying ‘After a shaky first half the second was a major improvement and the win was deserved in the end’.

Uni 6th’s 2-1 Team Sloth

Team Sloth took a tumble in the league slipping up to the Uni 6th’s in an exciting end to end game.  With both teams pumped for the game, it was the 6th’s who took the lead after a long ball over the Sloth defence found captain Dave Mitchell, whose cross took a wicked deflection off the Sloth defence, finding the corner of the goal.  With both teams creating chances, the 6th’s extended their lead at the end of the half with Paul G muscling through as sloppy defence to head in a bouncing ball from a corner.  Sloth came out stronger in the 2nd half and got within a goal of the 6th’s from an headed effort by super sub Dan Jones.  Sloth hit the woodwork several times, the closest coming from striker Richard Fouracre and despite a number of tactical changes, Sloth failed to break through the 6th’s defence again, resulting in Sloth losing two consecutive games for the first time in a number of years.
