SSE Final – Goldring gets personal with tracksuit dig!
Sunday 27/02 saw the two semi-finals of the SSE being played at Ashleigh Road. The 7ths beat the 6ths 3-2 to go into the final and will play Ajax Treesdown, who overcame SPR 4-1. Both teams will be delighted to play in the final on 16 March at 4pm in front of a large crowd. It was an early kick-off and you could tell by the faces of the players who had been out the night before, but the football didn’t disappoint and 10 goals were scored in the two semi–finals.
En route to the final, The Uni’s 7ths have beaten Hardly Athletic 4-2, Balls Deep 3-0 and now finally The Uni 6ths 3-2. Ajax have seen off Photosynthesis Grasshoppers 2-0, Sketty Bolognese 4-2 and now SPR 4-1. The 7th’s also have one hand on the league trophy, being the only team in the competition that remains unbeaten.
Ajax are hot on their heels in the league after beating fellow contenders the 6ths and Sloth, with captain Matt Goldring using his initiative to score a last minute winner against Sloth with his stomach. Goldring commented on the final, saying that ‘controlling this team of superstars has been a tough task but I just hope on the day we can do the intramural boys proud and smash their trackuits into the ground,’ which will surely heat up the cup final day banter...
After last year’s final, many of Ajax’s players were the runners up for the now defunct TITS FC who lost 3-1 to Sloth. With a crowd of 400+ expected, get down to Ashleigh Road early on the 16th for the 1pm league kick offs followed by the cup final at 4pm!
Ajax 4 - 1 SPR
Meanwhile, on the adjacent pitch, two of the league’s championship contenders locked horns in the other semi-final of the day. In the league match earlier in the season Ajax won 5-2 and SPR were definitely out to avenge that defeat.
The game started very evenly and a good midfield battle was brewing. Ajax were clever and didn’t always rely on Dan Rudge’s long throws in the attacking third but instead took throw-ins quickly, often surprising SPR who expected the ‘Delap’ special. SPR created a couple of good chances to score, but first were stifled by Spencer Jeffs who cleared off his line from a corner. The second was an attempted lob by SPR top scorer Jassim Al-Jaber, but the Ajax keeper did well to tip it over the bar. Despite these chances SPR looked a bit disjointed in the midfield.
Ajax, however, did create a couple of chances, but failed to take them and the teams went in goalless at half time. This was largely thanks to SPR goalkeeper Dave Cook who pulled off a couple of great saves, keeping it at 0-0.
Ajax’s team talk at half-time clearly worked and immediately they started to play better football. The deadlock was broken about 10 minutes into the second half when Tom Williams headed in a Dan Rudge corner. Williams had scored in every round of the cup, and here extended his good run.
Five minutes later Ajax struck again, another goal from a Rudge corner. The ball was cleared by the SPR defender and fell to Spencer Jeffs outside the area who hit a sumptuous rising volley into the corner of the goal – definitely the goal of the game. Ajax’s celebrations were of course jubilant and Chris Pretty accidently got a knock to the face for his troubles, nursing a bleeding nose as a result.
SPR didn’t give up, being 2-0 down, and managed to get a goal back from Will Houseman. A corner was cleared by the Ajax defence only to be headed back into the box and the ball fell nicely to winger Will who lashed it home from close range.
Towards the end of the second half Ajax made a substitution, bringing on Ben Gray for Daniel Clancy. It paid off as Ajax made it 3-1 just seconds later. A huge kick from the keeper was flicked on from fresh-legged Ben Gray which allowed Adam ‘Brute’ Bruton to kick it home.
Minutes later Jassim Al-Jaber had a chance for SPR but skied over from just inside the box. With the score at 3-1, it was a crucial moment, but unfortunately for SPR it wasn’t to be. Just minutes later Ajax put the game to bed when winger Pretty passed to Dan Rudge on the right flank, who cut inside and curled in a nice shot into the far corner – a great goal, albeit probably offside.
On the whole, a very decent game; no doubt Ajax deserved their win as they played the better football for the 90 minutes. They will be very motivated now to go and win the final on 16 March.
Uni 7ths 3 - 2 Uni 6ths
The all-Uni clash started brightly and the Uni 7ths took the lead early in the game after they scored a deflected volley from Pritch that arched over the keeper. 6ths captain David Mitchell equalised just after the opener, however, heading in from a cross by Jack Evans.
Ten minutes later the 7ths retook the lead by means of a freak goal. University 2nds loanee Matty Collins attempted a cross from 50 yards but the ball flew right over the 6ths goalie and into the top corner. Chris Prior (Pepe) took the game back to evens with a near post flick-on from a corner.
The semi-final looked as if it was heading for extra time; but, unfortunately for 6ths player Hitesh Patel, he scored an own goal after failing to clear from a low cross. It was a difficult situation for Patel to be in, for, had he left it, then the 7ths player behind him had an open goal and definitely would have scored. The goal made it 3-2 in favour of the 7ths.
David Mitchell summed up the game as disappointing, ‘as they didn’t play better at all; not saying we definitely deserved a win but we deserved to at least take it to extra time in my opinion.’
