LIBYAN STUDENTS FACE DIFFICULTIES
The effects of the ongoing crisis in Libya have hit a number of students in Swansea.
Some Libyan students last week faced the prospect of being left without funding. Students around the country are being affected by the uprisings in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya, as communicating with families in the areas affected is near to impossible.
While the students have since been awarded this month’s scholarship in time, the uncertainty raised serious financial worries, as the students are dependant on the monthly scholarship to support their families here in Swansea.
As the crisis continues, the students face huge difficulties accessing much-needed funds. When asked what course of action they would take in the event their funds were disrupted, the students explained; “We can cope for a few days, a few weeks, but no more. We have no idea what we’ll do after that.”
With regards to the crisis itself, the students expressed disbelief and shock at the events transpiring in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya at present, as one commented: “I feel like I’m in a dream – nobody expected this to happen so quickly,”
Geraint Davies, Labour MP for Swansea West, spoke to the students about their concerns on Friday 25 February and expressed the view that “this situation reflects the wider issue of the effects of the crisis on the Libyan and Muslim communities here in Swansea.”
International Student Adviser Neil Gaskin explained that in the event of a temporary disruption in funds, the university would be able to postpone demands for fees. The University also has an International Crisis Fund, which can “provide emergency assistance for International Students who face financial difficulties” according to a section on the university’s website.
